In this model, a detection value of an A/F sensor is obtained by multiplying histories of the cylinder-by-cylinder air-fuel ratio of an inflow gas in the exhaust collective part and histories of the detection value of the A/F sensor by specified weights respectively and by adding them. The cylinder-by-cylinder air-fuel ratio is estimated on the basis of the model.

In an air-fuel ratio feedback control system for engines, a feedback correction amount is calculated in response to an air-fuel ratio detected at an engine exhaust side to effect an air-fuel ratio feedback control even during an engine warm-up period. A delay time compensation amount is calculated from two basic fuel injection amounts calculated presently and previously. The previous fuel injection amount is calculated the delay time before the present fuel injection amount. The feedback correction amount is corrected with the delay time compensation amount. When the engine undergoes a transient operation condition such as acceleration or deceleration, the present fuel injection amount is corrected with the corrected feedback correction amount. When the basic fuel injection amount changes rapidly due to acceleration, the delay time compensation amount is decreased responsively and the corrected feedback correction amount is increased so that the present fuel injection amount is not reduced too much.

In an engine fuel supply system, the difference between the actual and target air-fuel ratios, an air-fuel ratio feedback correction coefficient and a learned correction amount are added as a parameter for diagnosing the fuel supply system. The diagnostic parameter is smoothed and the smoothed value is compared with a diagnosis reference value, thereby detecting a malfunction in the fuel supply system. Even if the learned correction amount is not updated, the malfunction in the fuel supply system can be promptly detected from the difference between the actual and target air-fuel ratios and the air-fuel ratio correction coefficient. The diagnosis reference value is determined variably in accordance with engine operating parameters such as the amount of intake air.

The deterioration determining circuit determines whether the exhaust system such as an oxygen sensor mounted downstream of the catalytic converter or the catalytic converter is deteriorated or not based on the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust emissions flowing downstream of the catalytic converter and the target downstream air-fuel ratio.

C. and an engine attains a complete combustion, an engine speed is integrated. It is determined whether a deviation between the integrated value of the engine speed and an integrated value of a set engine speed is larger than a predetermined determination value. As a result, it can be determined whether the fuel fed to the internal combustion engine has a volatility identical to that of the ordinary fuel, so that the fuel properties can be highly accurately determined.

When an engine is cold based on a cooling water temperature sensor, opening control is performed so as to control the amount of supplied assist air by controlling the opening degree of an air control valve. When the engine is warming-up, injection synchronization control is performed, in which opening and closing of the air control valve are controlled in synchronization with fuel injection from the fuel injection valves. Therefore, it is possible to suppress air pulsating noise resulting from the opening and closing the air control valve when the engine is warming up and to improve controllability of ISC functions in an assist air supply apparatus.

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine introduces, via an air passage bypassing a throttle valve, a portion of intake air flowing in an induction system of the engine to an area where fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve, so as to facilitate atomization of the injected fuel. The air passage includes therein a flow control unit for opening and closing the air passage. During an engine idling, a total opening time of the air passage effected by the flow control unit is variably controlled for adjusting a supply mount of the intake air through the air passage so as to realize a target idling engine speed. As a result, the intake air fed through the air passage works not only to facilitate the atomization of the injected fuel, but also to control the idling engine speed to the target value.
