A rare earth permanent magnet is in the form of a sintered magnet body having a composition R1aR2bTcAdFeOfMg wherein F and R2 are distributed such that their concentration increases on the average from the center toward the surface of the magnet body, the concentration of R2/(R1+R2) contained in grain boundaries surrounding primary phase grains of (R1,R2)2T14A tetragonal system within the sintered magnet body is on the average higher than the concentration of R2/(R1+R2) contained in the primary phase grains, and the oxyfluoride of (R1,R2) is present at grain boundaries in a grain boundary region that extends from the magnet body surface to a depth of at least 20 μm. The invention provides R—Fe—B sintered magnets which exhibit high magnet performance despite minimal amounts of Tb and Dy used.

Disclosed is a novel thin ribbon of a rare earth/iron/boron-based magnet alloy prepared by quenching of an alloy melt by the method of strip casting, from which a sintered permanent magnet is obtained by the powder metallurgical method. The sintered permanent magnet can be imparted with greatly improved magnetic properties or, in particular, residual magnetic flux density when the thin alloy ribbon as the base material thereof has a metallographic phase structure containing “four-phase regions” consisting of (a) an &agr;-iron phase, (b) a R-rich phase, in which R is a rare earth element selected from praseodymium, neodymium, terbium and dysprosium, (c) a RxT4B4 phase, in which T is iron or a combination of iron and a transition metal element other than iron and rare earth elements and x is a positive number varying with the rare earth element, and (d) a R2T14B phase, in which R and T each have the same meaning as defined above, each phase being dispersed with a grain diameter in a limited range, in a volume fraction of from 1 to 10%.

A nuclear halogenated aromatic compound possessing cyano groups is produced by a method using as a raw material an aromatic compound which possesses cyano groups and assumes a solid state at room temperature and subjecting the raw material to a procedure comprising a step of melting and transporting the compound by a means transport-melting, a step of vaporizing the compound, a step of mixing the compound with a halogen gas, and a step of causing the vapor of the compound to react with the halogen gas in vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst sequentially in the order mentioned, which comprises maintaining a content of a self-condensate of the aromatic compound possessing cyano groups which arise during the melting of the aromatic compound possessing cyano groups in a gas of the compound which reacts with the halogen gas to a level of not more than 2.5 mol % based on the compound. The catalyst used in the method is activated carbon such that the average pore radius thereof determined by the nitrogen adsorption method is not less than 12.2 .ANG. and the cumulative pore volume of the portion of the activated carbon having pore radiuses in the range of 5-100 .ANG. determined by the steam adsorption method is not less than 0.45 g/cc.

The devices, methods, and programs predict a between-curves time required to travel between the first curve and the second curve and determine whether the between-curves time is less than a predetermined time, the predetermined time being no less than a time necessary for the side support parts to operate. The devices, methods, and programs control the seat drive mechanism to arrange the side support parts at an action position to support a body of an occupant for the first curve. If the between-curves time is less than the predetermined time, the devices, methods, and programs maintain the side support parts at the action position while traveling the second curve.
