    摘要: A protective coating [26] and a method for applying the same on an optically pumped solid state laser [10] having a lasing medium in the form of a slab [12] with at least two opposed parallel pumping faces [18, 20] between which a laser beam [11] propagates along a zig-zag path dictated by total internal reflection between these pumping faces. The slab [12] has an input face [14] for coupling in the laser beam and an output face [16] for coupling it out. The protective coating [26] is an organic synthetic, processed thermoplastic, or thermosetting polymer. Preferred materials include polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyvinylidene chloride (PVC), polyethylene, polyimide, and Mylar.The protective coating [26] is applied onto the slab [12] from a solution in which the solvent is selected from the group of materials consisting of ketones, esters, and perfluorinated solvents. Most preferably, the protective coating [26] is a random copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and 2,2,bis-trifluoromethyl-4,5 difluoro 1,3 dioxole, traded under the name Teflon AF (R), and the solvent is a perfluorinated solvent. Most preferably, the perfluorinated solvent is a completely fluorinated organic compound comprising primarily C.sub.8 F.sub.18 (e.g., Fluorinert FC-75 (R)).

    摘要: Methods and apparatus are shown for cladding grown single crystal optical fibers. Neodymium YAG fibers are clad with a high index glass, either melted around the fiber in a trough or extruded over the fiber surface. Lithium niobate fibers are clad through an impregnation process. The lithium niobate fiber is first coated with magnesium oxide and then heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient for the magnesium oxide dopant material to diffuse into the fiber. The dopant lowers the intrinsic refractive indices of the fiber material around its circumference, creating a cladding region around the fiber core. Single crystal fibers clad by these methods and combined with suitable pumping means or with deposited electrodes provide low-loss single mode optical components useful for amplification, electro-optical effects and acousto-optical effects.

    摘要: Optically transparent quantum well structures, such as GaAs/Al.sub.0.5 Ga.sub.0.5 As, are electrically biased to produce a quadratic nonlinear optical susceptibility, the sign of which depends on the direction of the applied electric bias field. This quadratic nonlinear optical susceptibility is particularly useful for enhancing three-wave interactions especially when the applied bias field is made spatially periodic to obtain quasiphasematched interaction. Also, the quantum well material is preferably arranged in an optical waveguide for guiding the interacting waves to reduce unwanted diffraction effects.

    摘要: In a transverse-pumped, solid-state laser, a nonabsorptive cladding surrounds a gain medium. A single transverse mode, namely the TEM.sub.00 mode, is provided. The TEM.sub.00 mode has a cross-sectional diameter greater than a transverse dimension of the gain medium but less than a transverse dimension of the cladding. The required size of the gain medium is minimized while a threshold for laser output is lowered.

    摘要: The environment within an area is monitored through use of tomographic reconstruction techniques. Signals for use in the tomographic reconstruction are generated optically by a laser which transmits signals to reflectors positioned about the area and then to detectors around or within the area. Several embodiments illustrate the method whereby the signals are generated by sequential illumination of detectors or by simultaneous illumination of detectors.
