The present invention provides a ligand for a novel catalyst superior in such characteristics as selectivity (chemoselectivity and enantioselectivity) and catalytic activity in asymmetric synthesis reactions and a ligand for a novel catalyst effective in an asymmetric hydrogenation reaction in particular. A process for preparing optically active 4-hydroxy-2-pyrrolidone comprising asymmetrically hydrogenating an N-substituted-4-amino-3-oxobutanoic ester represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a benzyloxycarbonyl group, the benzene ring of which may be substituted; and R.sup.2 represents a lower alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in the presence of a ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex as a catalyst to obtain an optically active N-substituted-4-amino-3-hydroxybutanoic ester, deblocking, and cyclizing the ester. A series of the reactions can be carried out in one pot. Optically active 4-hydroxy-2-pyrrolidone is obtained in high yield with high optical purity, and is useful in the synthesis of carbapenem antibiotics

A process for production of an optically active isomer of 2-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy)-1-propanol represented by formula (I): ##STR1## is disclosed, which comprises reacting an optically active isomer of a 1-acyloxy-2-propanol represented by formula (II): ##STR2## wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, with 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran to obtain an optically active isomer of a 1-acyloxy-2-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy)propane represented by formula (III): ##STR3## wherein R is as defined above, and hydrolyzing the compound (III) to eliminate the acyl group. The optically active isomer of 2-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy)-1-propanol represented by formula (I) is an intermediate for synthesis of pyridobenzoxazine derivatives useful as a synthetic antibacterial agent, particularly an optically active isomer of ofloxacin.
