    Abstract: A preload measuring apparatus to measure the preload of a rolling bearing that includes a bearing support, a pressurization device, an excitation device, a vibration sensor, and a control section. The bearing support supports a rolling bearing by supporting both ends of a shaft inserted into an inner ring of the rolling bearing. The pressurization device loads a predetermined weight in the axial direction onto the rolling bearing. The excitation device applies vibration onto the rolling bearing by the drive of the piezoelectric elements. The vibration sensor detects the vibration generated on the rolling bearing by the vibration application of the excitation device. The control section operates the excitation device in the situation that the pressurization device presses the rolling bearing, and obtains the resonance frequency by the output signal from the vibration sensor and calculates the preload of the rolling bearing according to the obtained resonance frequency before the predetermined weight as loaded.

    Abstract: A process for preparing nitrogen-containing isotropic pitch, comprising the steps of mixing a petroleum heavy oil, a nitrating reagent and water to prepare a homogeneous dispersion, thereby contacting the petroleum heavy oil with the nitrating reagent in the homogeneous dispersion state to prepare a crude nitrated heavy oil, and subjecting the crude nitrated heavy oil to refining, thermal polymerization and vacuum distillation. According to the process of the invention, a petroleum heavy oil containing a large amount of light oil components and being liquid at ordinary temperature, from which pitch has been hardly prepared conventionally, is used as a starting material for preparing pitch, and there can be obtained nitrogen-containing isotropic pitch of homogeneity and high quality having a desired softening point of from a low softening point to a high softening point, though such pitch was unable to be obtained so far.

    Abstract: While maintaining a shaft in a fixed state, an outer ring is rotated. Vibrations of the shaft are detected by a first vibration pickup and a second vibration pickup. Detection signals of both the vibration pickups are delivered to a frequency converter via amplifier, respectively. The frequency converter determines, by Fourier transformation, the rotation frequency of the outer ring, the revolution frequency of balls and the resonance frequency of the double-row ball bearing. A first computing assembly then calculates the contact angle and bearing rigidity, and a second computing assembly calculates the preload.

    Abstract: In a magneto-optical recording element comprising a substrate, a magnetic layer and a dielectric layer, the dielectric layer is formed by deposition of a composition comprising Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 and a refractive index-improving agent such as Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 or Y.sub.2 O.sub.3. This dielectric layer has a high refractive index and the enhancement effect is improved. Moreover, this dielectric layer is excellent in the adhesion and resistance characteristics.

    Abstract: An image reading apparatus includes: a partial pre-scanning device configured to convey a reading unit in an edge detection area and causes the reading unit to execute a reading operation in the edge detection area, the edge detection area being a partial area within a scannable area on a platen, and a detecting device configured to detect a plurality of edge pixels on a basis of image data, the plurality of edge pixels representing a side of a document, the image data being outputted by the reading unit that reads the edge detection area through execution of the reading operation by the partial pre-scanning device. Upon the plurality of edge pixels not detected on the basis of the image data, the partial pre-scanning device moves the edge detection area in a conveying direction of the reading unit and causes the reading unit to execute the reading operation.
