The rear end of a large bore portion of the tool holder is slidably fitted into a spline ring which is secured to the front end of a middle housing. Spline grooves are formed in the inner periphery of the spline ring at its front end while spline gears are formed on the outer periphery of the large bore portion. When the spline grooves and the spline gears are engaged with each other, the tool holder, being urged backward, is locked with its rotation prohibited. This tool holder can be temporarily unlocked to allow its rotation by sliding a change ring cover forward and the tool holder itself, thereby disengaging the large bore portion from the spline ring.

This invention relates to an engine provided with a plurality of cylinder banks, exhaust manifolds for collecting exhaust from each bank, an exhaust branch pipe for combining the flows from the exhaust manifolds, and a three-way catalyst interposed in the exhaust branch pipe. An air-fuel ratio sensor is interposed in the exhaust manifold for each cylinder bank, and feedback control of the air-fuel ratio of each bank is performed based on the air-fuel ratio detected by the sensor of a specific bank such that this air-fuel ratio varies with a predetermined amplitude about the theoretical value as center value. The rich and lean times of the air-fuel ratio of the other banks are also measured from the output of the sensor at each bank, and feedback control is corrected for each bank such that the rich time is equal to the lean time for any bank. The number of sensors required for air-fuel ratio control of a multi-bank engine can therefore be reduced, and as the air-fuel ratio detected at the location of the three-way catalyst varies within a suitable range of tolerance, the exhaust cleaning performance of the three-way catalyst is improved.

A system and method for controlling an air/fuel mixture for an internal combustion engine are disclosed in which an integration constant used for a calculation of an integration portion included in a feedback correction coefficient (.alpha.) of the air/fuel mixture ratio after a relationship between an actual air/fuel mixture raito and target (stoichiometric) air/fuel mixture ratio has been inverted is set and varied according to an engine driving condition, so that the integration constant meets requirements of a stability during an engine steady driving condition and a favorable responsive characteristic during an engine transient condition. In a preferred embodiement, a fuzzy control is applicable to the calculation of the integration constant.
