An engine control system for hybrid vehicles, so as to smoothly switch the driving operation from the cylinder-deactivated engine operation, in which at least a part of the total number of cylinders of the engine is deactivated, to the all-cylinder-activated engine operation while considering the driver's intention. When the vehicle is decelerated, the cylinder-deactivated engine operation is performed and regeneration using the motor is performed. The system includes a cylinder deactivation release determining section for releasing the cylinder-deactivated engine operation when an engine speed decreases to a reference engine speed with respect to the cylinder-deactivated engine operation; and a brake operation detecting section for detecting whether a brake pedal is depressed. The cylinder deactivation release determining section includes a cylinder deactivation condition changing section for changing the reference engine speed according to whether the brake pedal is depressed, which is detected by the brake operation detecting section.

A method and apparatus for adapting powertrain braking to mass, grade, and brake temperature. Vehicle mass is determined using a vehicle speed sensor and an tractive effort model based on engine-torque delivered, torque converter multiplications, and transmission ratio and tire rolling radius effects. Road grade is continuously calculated and altitude change is calculated based on grade and distance traveled. To achieve an ideal amount of powertrain braking, powertrain braking is directed towards a designed coast performance target based on deceleration as a function of vehicle speed. Fuzzy logic is used to evaluate driver intentions, grade load conditions, terrain conditions, brake conditions and other vehicle information to determine the actual, optimal powertrain braking control. A real time brake thermal model is developed to provide increased powertrain under extreme brake conditions. The powertrain braking efforts are limited when restricted by available tractive efforts.

A brake plate has frusto-conical peripheral surface, and when the coil is energized, the surface engages the seat in an interference fit that is sufficiently tight to prevent the brake plate from being rotated relative to the housing. A spring washer is included to bias the brake plate from the locked position to the unlocked position.

The present invention relates to a maneuvering assistance system for automotive vehicles and a method of maneuvering automotive vehicles which permit a simple and safe maneuvering of the automotive vehicle particularly during a parking procedure. The present invention is especially advantageous when the automotive vehicle needs to be maneuvered, for example, on a steep positive or negative gradient. According to the present invention, a preselected or adjustable maneuvering speed is chosen such that the driver is not surprised by unwanted reactions of the automotive vehicle. The present invention especially comprises an accelerator pedal sensor [(5)] for detecting an accelerator pedal position [(&agr;)] and a device for determining a speed [(vref)] of the vehicle. The controller will output a signal to one or more of the various ground speed retarding systems associated with the work machine when the controller receives a signal from the second sensor indicative of the ground speed of the work machine being equal to a predetermined ground speed. In certain situations, the controller may output a signal to the engine governor system to shutoff all fuel to the engine to further retard the ground speed of the machine. The controller may also output a signal to a monitoring or warning system so as to provide the machine operator with an overspeed warning signal in the operator compartment.

A change in speed or direction of a gearbox output shaft is accomplished by a management controller sending a signal through a signal transmission system to bypass the clutch and engage the machine braking system. The method includes the steps of generating a signal; processing the signal by the management controller, sending a signal to bypass the clutch; and sending a signal to engage the vehicle braking system to change the speed or direction of rotation of the gearbox. Because changes of speed and/or direction of rotation of the output shaft are assisted by the machine braking system and the clutch is at least partially bypassed, it is ensured that the braking function of the starting clutch is considerably reduced or even eliminated. This leads to a considerable reduction in wear on the clutch, so that its service life can be greatly increased.

The actual direction of travel of the motor vehicle is determined here by means of a sensor unit.
