Abstract:
A water treatment unit includes a base and a disposable, plug-in cartridge. The cartridge contains a pair of hollow cylindrical, porous, solid water treatment elements designed to treat water flowing radially through their walls. The cylindrical elements are mounted so as to act in parallel, thereby achieving the advantages of a long, thin-walled element in a compact configuration.
Abstract:
A filter apparatus and coating method particularly adapted for thixotropic coating solutions and which yet permits the dead space within the housing of the filter apparatus for the secondary region to be reduced under a broad range of conditions at all times. The improved filter apparatus has a filter provided within a housing in such a way that it divides the interior of the housing into a primary region into which a coating to be filtered is supplied and a secondary region which receives the coating solution after it is filtered. The apparatus filters the coating solution just before it is coated on a flexible base. The apparatus is characterized in that the housing for the secondary region is designed in such a way that an index for measurement of the dead space within the housing satisfies the relation T/.tau.> 0.95, where .tau. is an experimentally determined dimensionless number for the indicial response time of the housing and T is a dimensionless number of theoretical time.
Abstract:
A shut-off valve for use in a filtration system with a filter element having a tubular coupling member at one end arranged so that when the filter is installed in the system the coupling element extends into a tubular housing to displace a spool to thereby permit flow through the filter element, the spool being returned by a compression spring to a closed position within the housing to shut off flow when the filter element is removed, the tubular housing having a pair of spaced apart internal sealing faces and the spool having a matching pair of spaced apart sealing surfaces that close against each other when the spool is in the closed position to thereby prevent flow through the valve. The valve is arranged in such a way that when in the closed position fluid pressure applied to the valve exerts force on the spool to urge it more tightly into the closed position.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus are provided for treating and removing particulate matter from fluid circulatable into, through and out of an industrial operation, and for cleaning a disposable cartridge filter used therein. In treatment of fluid, the fluid is circulated in a flow path and is introduced into a filter vessel having a disposable cartridge filter. The fluid flows through the cartridge filter at a rate of flow insufficient to produce a buildup of a substantially non-porous solids filter cake around the exterior of the cartridge filter. The clean fluid is circulated to the industrial operation. The cleaning method and apparatus includes a storage vessel in selective fluid communication with the interior of the first vessel such that clean fluid may be flowed from the storage vessel into the interior of the cartridge filter then through and thereafter exterior of the cartridge filter to effectively remove the particulate matter deposited on or around the exterior of the cartridge filter.
Abstract:
The filter has a spiral of, or parallel, spaced lengths of, double-ply material whose plies are seamed together along spaced, longitudinal seams to provide an array of side-by-side tubes. The filter support material is highly flexible and has a thickness not greater than 1 mm. Due to the tubular formation, the filter support has an uninterrupted filter zone of substantial area relative to the total area of the filter support; during filtration (when the filter support is under the pressure of the feed) the tube walls bulge out and the filter zone is restrained solely by tensile forces in the filter support itself. Substantial movement of the filter support is possible in the direction at right angles to its face when the pressures on either side of the filter support are equal. The filter support has many applications, but one application is when the filter is connected downstream of an aeration vessel with no intervening vessel, the concentrate outlet of the filter being connected to the aeration vessel for sludge return.
Abstract:
An improved triangular filter cartridge and apparatus is provided comprising a generally cylindrical vessel having a plurality of generally triangularly shaped filter cartridges disposed therein. Each triangular filter cartridge has one of its substantially flat sides slightly spaced apart from and in direct facing relationship with the inner surface of the vessel, whereby a greater number of triangular filter cartridges can be compactly disposed within said vessel to increase the filtration capacity thereof. Each filter cartridge includes a passage that is triangularly shaped in a plane perpendicular to the axial direction.
Abstract:
A novel process for removing suspended solids from a liquid without loss of heel portion comprising circulating a suspension of a precoat filter aid through a closed chamber provided with at least one vertical tubular, liquid pervious filter aid retainer supported on a tube sheet with the lower pervious section level with said tube sheet until a filter cake is formed on said retainer, pumping a liquid with suspended solids through the chamber whereby clear liquid passes through said filter cake into said retainer where clear liquid is recovered and suspended solids are deposited on filter cake, continuing pumping liquid with suspended solids until a maximum differential pressure is reached, reduce the pumping rate of liquid while simultaneously increasing air pressure to a maximum of 15 psig in the chamber, draining liquid from the chamber through the filter cake and retainer while maintaining air pressure of 2 to 15 psig to recover the heel portion, abruptly back washing liquid through the retainer and filter cake whereby the filter cake is destroyed and draining the mixture of filter cake and back wash liquid from the chamber and a novel apparatus for performing the said process.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a biasing arrangement for use with a filter element having a longitudinal bore therethrough. The biasing arrangement includes a spring element having first and second ends and being comprised of a plastic material. The spring element is deformable by pressure applied in the direction generally along an axis extending between the first and second ends. A sealing disk is adapted to seal an end of the longitudinal bore of the filter element. The sealing disk is also comprised of a plastic material and is positively secured to an end of the spring element. According to a further aspect of the present invention, the sealing disk is positively secured to an end of the filter element to define an integral filter unit. In the preferred embodiment, the spring element, the sealing disk, and the filter element are all comprised of compatible plastic materials. In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention, the spring element has a non-linear load/deflection characteristic such that a large force is obtained during initial deflection followed by a substantially constant force upon further deflection.
Abstract:
A multipart filter case assembly for holding at least one cartridge-shaped filter element for sterile filtration of fluids comprises means to detect and detour leaking fluids, and includes a bell-shaped top part; an intermediate plate, which closes off the top part; an end cap; a filter-chamber, which closes off the intermediate plate; at least two ring-shaped packings arranged at a longitudinal distance on the end cap against the top part; a filtrate chamber, which closes off the intermediate plate; and at least one leakage control channel, which connects the space between the two ring packings with the outside of the case.
Abstract:
A cylindrical housing is adapted to receive and discharge fluid in a subterranean well. In a preferred form, a plate is positioned in the cylinder separating it into first and second chambers. Filter adapter receiving means are disposed across the plate, with a filter adapter securable therein, the adapter having a passageway extending to the chambers. The adapter has a cylindrical housing having an enlarged cartridge positioning portion. A grooveway is defined on the adapter extending exteriorly therearound for securing one end of a cartridge filter. A cartridge filter is positionable on the adapter and provides a seal having an interiorly facing circumferentially extending lip for contact with the exterior of the cylindrical housing when the filter is located on the adapter, for sealingly securing the filter to the adapter.
