The invention relates to a four- or six-high rolling stand for a rolling train and to a method for operating the same. The aim of the invention is to provide rolling stands that can adapt rapidly to rolling products of different thicknesses and/or hardnesses. To achieve this, rolling stands are provided with minimum expenditure that can be selectively operated with both thin and thick working rolls. The inventive combined drive in the four- or six-high rolling stand allows thick working rolls to be directly connected to a motor, whereas thin working rolls are merely carried along by neighbouring back-up rolls or intermediate rolls by means of friction.

The apparatus comprises a pair of rotatable devices each holding a plurality of metal shaping and/or cutting rollers, the rollers of one device meshing with rollers of the other device to produce specific designs or widths of material. This is made possible by merely selecting suitable rollers of both sets and when production of a specific metallic section of desired widths are terminated, other rollers are selected by rotating the rotatable devices. When suitable rollers have been selected they are locked in operating position and when another design or widths are required, the devices are unlocked, a selection is made, and the devices are again locked to produce the new metallic section or widths of material. The present quick automated tool changer, i.e. QATC, roll forming apparatus is characterized by a novel indexing device for the two forming rolls to be used in a roll forming operation; by the use of Brushless-type motors for individually driving the shafts carrying the forming rolls in use, these motors being of the constant torque type; by quick-changing supports carrying the rolls for allowing the rolls which are not in use to be changed; by sensors on the cylinders providing the force on the forming rolls for giving feedback to the operator on changes in this force; and by a pair of gears selectively engageable with the gearing mechanism linking the Brushless motors to the forming rolls in use for providing a larger range of operating speeds of the forming rolls.

A lubricant is supplied from headers of lubricant supply units onto surfaces of back-up rolls at locations spaced from contact positions between a pair of work rolls and a pair of back-up rolls. The headers each include a lubricant spray nozzle for spraying the lubricant under a pressure not lower than 3 kg/cm.sup.2, a header cover for confining the lubricant sprayed from the lubricant spray nozzle, an oil return line for returning the surplus lubricant, and seal members made of flexible material such as rubber. The work rolls are provided with water wiping plates, and the back-up rolls are also provided with water wiping plates. In a work rolls crossing type mill thus arranged, water films of cooling water deposited on the roll surfaces are removed to prevent the cooling water from mixing into the lubricant. Even if the water films are not totally removed, it is possible to surely plate out the lubricant for reliably lubricating between the work rolls and the back-up rolls. Raw lubricant oil of the lubricant meets the following requirements; (a) the coefficient of friction between said work rolls and said back-up rolls is in the range of 0.04 to 0.1, (b) the viscosity is not larger than 80 Cst. at 40.degree. C., (c) mineral oil and synthetic ester not less than 5% are contained as base oil, (d) a fatty acid in the range of 0.03 to 0.5% is contained as an oiliness enhancer, (e) an extreme pressure additive not less than 0.1% is contained, and preferably, (f) a surface active agent not larger than 0.5% is contained as emulsifier.

A pair of rolling-mill rolls are mounted on respective shafts each journaled in an eccentric sleeve in turn journaled in a housing. The sleeves are rotatable about sleeve axes which are parallel to but offset from the axes of the rolls so that rotation of these sleeves changes the rolling gap width. Each shaft carries, on its end opposite the roll, a pinion received in a ring gear journaled in the housing for rotation about a fixed axis coinciding with the axis of the respective sleeve. The gear connection to the shaft, consisting of inner gear and orbiting gear, is cantilevered to enable one to have a fixed axis while the other orbits. Each ring gear is carried on a shaft which in turn carries a gear wheel meshing with the gear wheel of the other ring-gear shaft. One ring-gear shaft is rotated to thereby drive the rolls, whose pinions orbit within the ring gears on rotation of the sleeves. A knob rotationally coupled to a worm is openable to rotate intermeshing gears formed on the sleeves through a step-down self-blocking gear train. A belleville washer frictionally engages the knob to prevent the rolls from going out of adjustment.
