The invention relates to a method for detecting the vibrations of a roll stand (1) equipped with a hydraulic jack (6) as a device for adjusting the rolling rolls (4, 5). The hydraulic jack comprises a sensor (64) for measuring the position of the mobile portion relative to the fixed portion, this sensor supplying a digital signal (POS). In the method of the invention, the vibrations are detected by direct observation of the position signal (POS) and a comparison thereof relative to a spatio-temporal window (F) whose dimensions are determined as a function of the frequency to be detected. In accordance with the invention, it is possible to define different observation windows (F) suitable for the detection of different vibratory phenomena. In a tandem mill, the position signal (POS) of the hydraulic jack (6) of each roll stand (1) is observed in accordance with the method of the invention, which enables the commencement of vibration on each of the stands to be detected and the stand on which the phenomenon started to be determined.

The damping means is a specially designed absorption system to provide tuned stiffness and damping elements which act in parallel and are located in compartment (46) at an uppermost end or cap of the piston (42). A second vibration absorbent compartment portion (56) of the piston (42) also includes vibration absorbing components. Portion (56) is an integral cap located at the end of the piston (42) in contact with the fluid (52).

When rolling steel sheet and other rolled stock, rattling occurs in certain operating states. This results in reduced quality of the rolled stock and rejects as well as damage to the rolling mill. No improvement was achieved by placing brakes on the cylinders. Electronic monitoring is not a satisfying solution. Given that rattling is a self-starting oscillation, resistance sensors are coupled to the cylinders and/or the rolled stock in order to stabilize the self-starting oscillation modes, modes with negative damping, by means of additional damping. In the example illustrated in FIG. 4, cylinder-shaped, rotating dampers are coupled to the working cylinders. Concentric or disc-shaped layers made of steel and plastic such as those found in layered oscillation absorbers are most effective and adaptable. The arrangement of the working cylinder and the damper illustrated in FIG. 4 makes it possible to suppress vertical (nullx1 direction) oscillations and the self-starting rattling oscillations in x2 and null5 direction responsible for the thickness and form waves caused by rattling in the rolled stock.

The system also includes at least one mass overlying the at least one piezoelectric actuator, whereby the at least one piezoelectric actuator lies between the mass and the dynamic surface, and a controller in communication with the at least one sensor for receiving the feedback signal, generating an output signal in response to the feedback signal and sending the output signal to the at least one piezoelectric actuator. The piezoelectric actuator applies a counter force between the dynamic surface and the mass upon receiving the output signal for reducing or controlling vibration of the dynamic surface.
