Thermally-reversible polymer compositions are obtained by reacting compounds with isocyanate and labile-hydrogen functionality. Aromatic polyimide, aromatic polycarbonate, polyarylsulfide, aromatic polyester with liquid crystal property, and polyarylimidazolidine oligomers are incorporated into the isocyanate or labile hydrogen compounds to give high-performance characteristics. Such thermally-reversible isocyanate-based polymer compositions with high-performance characteristics are useful, among other things, as finish surface coatings on composite materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate. Novel phenolic-hydroxyl terminated polyarylsulfide and polyarylimidazolidine oligomers and their preparation are also described.

Low-temperature flexibility and toughness are imparted to the polymers by using prepolymers such as polycaprolactone diols, polytetramethylene ether glycols and polyaliphatic carbon diols. Ionic bonding and liquid-crystal functionality may also be incorporated into the compositions. The compositions are useful as hot-melt adhesives, coatings, and moldings and in injection reaction molding applications and composite and laminate fabrication.

A plasticized polyurethane elastomer prepared from the combination of a polyol and an isocyanate is disclosed wherein a sufficient amount of an alpha hydroxy acid ester of a hydroxy polyol plasticizer is incorporated in the elastomer to improve the physical properties of the elastomer. The invention relates to a one-shot process for the preparation of cellular or noncellular polyurethane polyurea parts having a modulus of flexural elasticity greater than 600 N/mm.sup.2 and densities of from 0.8 to 1.2 g/cm.sup.3 using the reaction injection molding technique, by reacting organic polyisocyanates, a polyol component, aromatic diamines, additional chain extenders and/or cross-linking agents in the presence of catalysts and optionally blowing agents, auxiliaries and/or additives, wherein the polyol component is a mixture containing(i) from 95 to 60 percent by weight of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of polyols, polyether polyamines, polyesteramides, and their mixtures having functionalities of from 2 to 6 and a molecular weight of from 1000 to 8000 and(ii) from 5 to 40 percent by weight of a least one aromatic and/or aromatic-aliphatic polyester polyol having a functionality of from 2 to 3 and a molecular weight of from 254 to 700, wherein the percents by weight are based on the total weight of the polyol component.

Homogenous liquid polyol blend compositions containing (a) certain aliphatic polyols, (b) phthalate diester polyols of said aliphatic polyols, and (c) trimellitate polyols of said aliphatic polyols. Such polyol blend compositions are useful in making homogenous liquid resin prepolymer blends compositions containing, in addition to such a polyol blend, fluorocarbon blowing agent, cell stabilizing surfactant, and urethane and/or isocyanurate catalyst. Such a resin prepolymer blend composition is suitable for reaction with organic isocyanates to produce cellular polyurethane and/or polyisocyanurate polymers.

Aqueous dispersions of oil-modified, carboxyl-containing, urethane polymers are prepared by reacting diisocyanates or their isocyanate-terminated prepolymers, with half-esters of hindered diols, especially 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol, and anhydrides of polycarboxylic acids, preferably aromatic acids having at least three carboxylic groups, especially trimellitic anhydride. The urethane polymers are "oil-modified", i.e., extended with unsaturated fatty acid esterpolyols; and when neutralized with ammonia or amines can be dispersed in water to form especially desirable coating compositions. An organic phosphite may be incorporated in the compositions to control the development of hardness in films made from the aqueous dispersions and thereby avoid the formation of wrinkles in films that are made from the compositions.
