A plurality of extruded aluminum structural modules of selected different peripheral sizes are configured to be disposed in adjacent coacting positions so that a selected number of such modules assembled together form a peripherally enclosed modular structural member. Each module includes components of module positioning elements in the form of splines sizes and configured to coact with mating module positioning elements of the other structural modules to facilitate assembly of modules into a structural member. Force applying devices, such as HELICOILS are disposed to urge the module positioning elements together to insure the integrity of the assembled modular structural member. Each structural module further is configured with openings that may be threaded so that plates and the like may be attached to the member by threaded devices and elongated slots, such as "T" slots that receive and mount members, such as "T" bolts or nuts, through which other elements, components and devices may be carried by and mounted to the structural members. The structural members may be extended in length by staggered connection of modules or module sets and may be secured together by bolts or the like to form various constructions.

An elongate construction element according to the invention is made of plastic which has a first, low modulus of elasticity, and a lamination of a material which has a second, significantly higher modulus of elasticity inside the construction element. The construction element has at least one system plane along which the construction element has essentially homogeneous characteristics and is essentially homogeneously constructed. The lamination lies on both sides of the system plane and crosses through the latter at least at one point. The cross-sectional areas of the lamination and the plastic are inversely proportional functions of the effective moduli of elasticity of the plastic and of the lamination so that the flexural rigidities of the cross-sectional areas are essentially equal. The lamination is at least essentially continuous.

A roof system positionable over an existing roof wherein the roof system is formed of at least one roof section. The roof section includes (a) a plurality of adjustable trusses disposed along a preselected section of the existing roof, each of the trusses having a lower cord, a spatially disposed upper cord and an adjustable web assembly interconnecting the lower cord and the upper cord, the lower cord of each truss disposed substantially adjacent the existing roof such that the trusses extend upwardly from the existing roof in a substantially parallel relationship with the adjacently disposed trusses, the web assembly of each of the trusses being adjustable such that the upper cord of each of the trusses is substantially horizontally disposed a selected predetermined height above the existing roof and independent of the slope of the existing roof and the position of the lower cord; (b) truss fastener members for connecting the lower cord of each of the trusses to the existing roof; (c) at least one roof panel member supported by the upper cords of the trusses, the roof panel member being disposed to substantially traverse the upper cords of the trusses; and (d) fastener members for connecting the roof panel member to the upper cords of the trusses to form the roof system having a predetermined roof plane substantially independent of the plane of the existing roof. The roof system is further provided with gutter assemblies. A method for installing the roof system over an existing roof is also provided.

A pre-stressed construction element is set forth which includes a rigid member adapted to span longitudinally between upright supports and to define a load bearing construction element. At least one tendon extends longitudinally along the member and is connected at or adjacent the ends of the member. To pre-stress the member, each tendon is tensioned resulting in a pre-stressing compressive force to be imposed on the member at its ends. Pre-stressing enhances the load bearing characteristics of the member. To impose lateral pre-stress forces on the member supports may be provided. One or several tendons engage are deflected by and underlie the support. When the tendon is tensioned, a force is imposed upon the support and thereby the member.

The present invention provides an improved standing seam roof assembly comprising first and second corrugation crowns formed in a roof panel along opposing sides of a medial panel portion, each of these corrugation crowns having tab engaging protrusions disposed along the medial panel portion. A pair of spaced apart retaining tabs are supported beneath the roof panel to receive the tab engaging protrusions, and retaining struts are disposed above the roof panel for preventing disengagement with the retaining tabs to maintain securement of the medial panel portion to the underlying structure in its assembled position. Also, an improved female/male interlock seam assembly is provided, as well as an improved butt joint assembly. An insulation cutter and improved Z purlin design are featured as well.
