摘要:
Apparatus for expanding a tube into a bore formed in tube sheet in which a primary explosive containing a relatively high number of grains of explosive per unit length extends within the tube coextensive with that portion of the tube to be expanded. An energy transfer cord extends between a detonator and the primary explosive and includes a relatively low number of grains of explosive per unit length which are insufficient to detonate the primary explosive but which be covered by a sheath to contain the debris and gases associated with the explosion of the latter explosive. A booster extends between the energy transfer cord and the primary explosive and contains an explosive which is detonatable by the energy transfer cord and, upon exploding, detonates the primary explosive.

A two-stage method of expanding tubes into holes in tubesplates including walls of drums and headers especially in boilers using an elastomeric body which in a first stage is compressed axially in the tube and which expands radially to expand the tube beyond its elastic limit into close engagement with the hole wall. In a second stage a second elastomeric body of different dimensions is compressed axially to stress the tube and an annular zone of the tubeplate around the tube beyond their elastic limits. Problems of excessive extrusion of and damage to the elastomeric body where tolerances on tube or hole diameter produces excessive clearances are avoided even where high expansion forces are used.

A solderless type heat exchanger having an upper and lower tanks, header plates closing the opposing opened ends of respective tanks, a plurality of tubes extending through the head plates to provide a communication between the upper and lower tanks, and a plurality of plate fins attached to the outside of the tubes, the tubes being joined to the header plates and plate fins solely by pressure contact therebetween provided through expansion of the tubes. The header plate is provided with a collared portion around each bore for receiving the corresponding tube and an annular groove is formed around the periphery of each collared portion. The annular groove provides a resiliency which ensures the rigid and stable joint between the tubes and the header plate achieved solely by the pressure contact through the expansion of the tube.

Method and apparatus for differentially rolling-in tubes into plates and walls, especially of heat exchangers, according to which the magnitude of the expansion of the tube section to be rolled-in into the respective wall or plate is predetermined, is ascertained and maintained during the rolling-in action. The magnitude of the tube expansion for connection of the tube to the respective plate or wall is adjustable in conformity with a program and has different values over the rolling-in length of the tube.

Tube ends are engaged in passage openings of tube plates and protrude above collars surrounding said passage openings. The larger sides of the tube ends are folded back and rolled about said collars. Part of the tube walls under said passage openings is enlarged.

The pipe is fitted with at least a pair of explosive members, one of which serves to weld the pipe to the perforated plate while the other serves to expand the pipe into bearing contact with the plate. The detonation of the two members takes place in the same operation. A third explosive member can also be fitted in the pipe for welding the pipe to an opposite side of the plate.
