In a preferred embodiment, the sanitizer cartridge is constructed with an outer fluid-permeable member and an inner fluid-permeable member, the outer and inner members substantially enveloping a space therebetween, with the space containing a sanitizing media bed. In operation, as fluid enters the filter housing through the fluid inlet, substantially the full flow of fluid passes through the filter cartridge, through the sanitizer cartridge and around the sanitizing media contained within the bed, into the hollow core of the sanitizer cartridge, and out of the filter housing through the fluid outlet.

An in-line gravity filtration device for biological fluids such as blood or blood products is disclosed. The device includes a series of channels formed downstream of filtration elements. The channels are defined in cross sectional area by the distance between the filtration elements and their bottoms. The channels are configured to form flow paths to an outlet port so that air within the channels is forced downstream through the outlet port thereby minimizing air being trapped on the downstream side of the device. For optimum performance, the cross section area of a single continuous channel, or the sum of the cross sectional area of parallel channels, leading to a single outlet port, should not exceed the cross sectional area of the outlet port.

Incorporating a permeable hose within a peristaltic pump results in a unique device that can simultaneously pump, filter and self-clean suspensions, producing a concentrate and clarified liquid stream. This process, termed peristaltic filtration, has wide applicability to a variety of commercial and industrial applications, including dewatering sludge in sand and gravel operations the treatment of water or other streams in industrial plants, municipal wastewater treatment plants, and food processing. The flexing motion that accompanies peristaltic pumping enhances filtration of the suspension by locally increasing the pressure and cleaning the filter by bending the hose to release trapped solids back into the suspension. Peristaltic filtration can be applied to conventional rotary pumps, linear pumps or other configurations. Rotary peristaltic filters are also modular and can be made to be adaptable to a variety of feedstocks.
