A method for controlling an ignition system for internal combustion engines where the sparking current together with the sparking period can be set to a particular value. The method described here makes it possible for each cylinder in the engine to be supplied with just the amount of ignition energy to meet the momentary requirement of the engine, and consequently a spark plug replacement interval of more than 100,000 km can be achieved. In accordance with the present invention, both the value of the sparking current and the value of its sparking period are controlled independently according to certain engine parameters, in particular load, engine speed and temperature. The method in accordance with the present invention can be applied preferably in an alternating current or high voltage capacitor ignition system.

Apparatus and method for a plasma discharge for ignition in an internal combustion engine. A digital electronic system controls ignition performance and can provide an ignition discharge throughout an entire power stroke of a piston in a cylinder. The discharge can be controlled by a signal from a conventional distributor, crank trigger or other source. Controllable discharge of a capacitor occurs through the primary winding of an ignition coil. In addition, the capacitor may be both discharged and recharged in an oscillatory manner through the primary of the ignition coil. Such oscillatory discharging and recharging of the capacitor results in energy being delivered to the spark plug during both discharge and recharge cycles, thereby resulting in the delivery of discharge energy to the spark plug on a substantially continuous basis.

For the purpose of prolonging the ignition sparks so as to reliably ignite, especially in a lean fuel/air mixture, the control unit, at a time following the ordinary ignition time, actuates the second circuit-breaking element in such a way that it is kept conductive simultaneously with the first circuit-breaking element. Current is then supplied from an electrical energy source and via a primary winding. Thereafter, the control unit actuates either the first or second circuit-breaking elements in such a way that the current supply via the primary winding is interrupted, by which means a renewed ignition voltage is obtained which prolongs the ordinary ignition spark.

An ignition apparatus of a capacitor discharge ignition type comprises: an ignition timing signal generator to generate an ignition timing signal synchronized with the rotation of the engine; a capacitor; a blocking oscillator; a rectifier for rectifying the output voltage of the blocking oscillator and applying the rectified voltage to the capacitor thereby charging the capacitor; a switching device which is turned on in response to the ignition timing signal and discharges the stored charges of the capacitor, thereby generating a pulse voltage across the terminals of the primary winding of an ignition coil; and an ignition plug to generate a spark discharge by a high voltage generated in the secondary winding of the ignition coil. The blocking oscillator oscillates concurrently with the engine rotation. When the ignition timing signal is generated, the oscillation of the blocking oscillator is stopped in accordance with a phase of the output voltage of the AC generator. With this apparatus, a vain charging of the capacitor and a vain spark discharge can be prevented when the engine's rotation stops. The generation of a counter torque on the engine can be certainly prevented.

The multiple spark circuit includes a charge reservoir capacitor connected to the current supply, a restrike circuit subject to the timing SCR, and to the voltage and discharge current of the charge capacitor, for allowing repeated charging and discharging of the charge capacitor to produce multiple ignition sparks at each ignition timing point, and a charge interrupt circuit, subject to the restrike circuit, for allowing repeated charging of charge capacitor by the charge reservoir capacitor at each ignition timing point. The restrike circuit preferably comprises a thyristor connected to the timing SCR and charge capacitor, and a zener diode connected to the thyristor gate and anode to render the thyristor conductive when the charge capacitor voltage exceeds a predetermined upper limit. The charge interrupt circuit preferably includes a Darlington transistor connected between the charge reservoir capacitor and the charge capacitor, with the base connected to the current supply and to the ignition coil primary winding, whereby, when the charge capacitor is discharging, the base current is shunted to interrupt charging of the charge capacitor by the charge reservoir capacitor.
