Disclosed herein is a power supply device. The power supply device includes a conversion unit converting an applied voltage into a predetermined level, a switching unit performing an opening operation or a closing operation to control a current flowing in the conversion unit, a sensing unit sensing an occurrence of overcurrent when a voltage applied to the switching unit is equal to or larger than a reference voltage set in advance, and a control unit performing a protection operation when the overcurrent is sensed again within a protection time set in advance after a predetermined time is delayed from the time at which the overcurrent is sensed, so that malfunction due to noise is prevented.

Methods and apparatuses, including computer program code are disclosed herein that provide adaptive battery protection. A method includes disabling a timer, when a current drawn by a battery-powered device from a battery is less than or equal to a lower current threshold. When the timer is disabled, the battery may remain connected to the battery-powered device. The method further includes enabling the timer when the current drawn from the battery is greater than the lower current threshold and less than an extended current threshold. When the timer is enabled, the timer may allow the battery to remain connected to the battery-powered device until the timer expires. The method further includes disconnecting the battery when the timer expires or when the current drawn from the battery exceeds the extended current threshold.

The present invention provides a protection circuit. The protection circuit includes an output stage circuit and a feedback unit that generates a first current. Under a first condition that the first current is one of currents larger than and equal to a rated current and the first condition remains for a first period, the feedback unit controls the output stage circuit to restrict the first current. Under a second condition that the first current is one of currents larger than and equal to a restriction current and the second condition remains for a second period, the feedback unit controls the output stage circuit to terminate the first current.

A circuit breaker includes current detectors, a microprocessor-controlled tripping device, and a bypass circuit that interacts with a watchdog circuit that monitors the proper functioning of the microprocessor. A switchable reference voltage is made available to the bypass circuit as a function of the momentary supply voltage. During short circuits, the bypass circuit, immediately upon being switched on, responds to very high limit current values, whereas after the switch-on phase, it already responds at moderately high limit current values.

A circuit interrupter of the type including an electronic trip unit for overcurrent determination includes a separate circuit to power the trip unit along with a Hall Effect or GMR Device to sense the current flow within the protected circuit. A removable option plug electrically interconnects with the trip unit to enable ground fault and arcing fault protection.

A method of detecting an abnormal electric current in a vehicle to detect passage of an abnormal electric current through an electric wire for establishing the connection between a load to which electric power is supplied and a power source, the method of detecting an abnormal electric current in a vehicle comprising the steps of: (a) detecting values of electric currents which pass through the electric wire at predetermined sampling intervals; (b) counting the number of times in a unit detection period that a sampled electric current having a value larger than a predetermined value is detected and determining passage of an abnormal electric current through the electric wire when the number of counts is larger than a first number of times; and (c) counting the number of times that a sampled electric current having a value larger than the predetermined value is detected in a unit detection period after the unit detection period in terms of time in a case where the number of counts is smaller than the first number of times and except for zero and determining passage of an abnormal electric current through the electric wire when the number of counts is larger than a second number of times.
