    摘要: An acoustical barrier (10) for mounting to the fire wall (20) of a motor vehicle includes a sound barrier layer (12) of a molded construction and sound dampening characteristics. The sound barrier layer (12) has an integrally molded boot (40) for receiving and acoustically sealing a steering column (70). The boot (40) has a base portion (42) integrally molded with a convolute portion (48), and a cap portion (56) integrally molded with the convolute portion (48). The convolute portion (48) includes a continuous outer wall section (50) surrounding an opening (46) in the sound barrier layer (12). The continuous outer wall section (50) has an upper end integrally formed with a flexible bight portion (54). A continuous inner wall (52) has an upper end integrally formed with the bight portion (54) and a lower end integrally formed with the cap portion (56). The cap portion (56) has an opening coincident with the openings (46, 78) in the sound barrier layer (12) and fire wall (20), respectively. The thickness of the convolute portion (48) is less than the thickness of the base portion (42), cap portion (56) and sound barrier layer (12) to prevent distortion of the sound barrier layer (12) during installation of the steering column (70). An absorber layer (14) can be mounted between the sound barrier layer (12) and fire wall (20).

A distance .alpha. between the pressing portion and the cover tube, a distance .beta. between the cover tube and the tube, and a distance .gamma. between the shaft and a member associated with a yoke in the steering device are set to satisfy the condition .alpha.+.beta.

    摘要: A Cardan joint is designed to eliminate the bolt normally used between male and female interfitted tubular elements for preventing axial motion and for coupling the parts so as to facilitate assembly of the shaft under any conditions, i.e. both in the factory and when the shaft is repaired. For preventing axial motion and holding the elements together, the outer surface of the male part and the inner surface of the female part have distorted cross-sectional portions. The male part has projections at one end which have a peripherally indented configuration similar to the female part.

    摘要: A flexible boot (10) comprises a body (80) which defines a cavity (82) for receiving a universal joint (50). A first end portion (100) of the body (80) encircles an intermediate steering shaft (30). The first end portion (108) includes a pair of annular ribs (110 and 112) and a first annular lip (102) which extends radially inward to provide a seal between the first end portion (100) of the body (80) and the intermediate steering shaft (30). The pair of annular ribs (100 and 112) are located adjacent the first annular lip (102) and extend radially inward. The pair of ribs (110 and 112) define a recess (118) therebetween. The flexible boot (10) further comprises a bearing (90) in the recess (118) for supporting rotation of the intermediate steering shaft (30) relative to the flexible boot (10), and a second end portion (120) of the body (80) which includes a second annular lip (122) for receipt in a groove (62) on a steering gear housing (60) to secure the body (80) to the steering gear housing (60). A center portion (140) of the body (80) interconnects the first end portion (100) with the second end portion (120). The center portion (140) is axially expandable.

    摘要: A combined seal and boot assembly for protectively covering a telescoping connection between two shaft members in a steering shaft assembly includes a cylindrical body portion, a flexible boot portion, and a pair of sealing lips. The body portion is frictionally mounted on the end of the female splined steering shaft member. The flexible boot portion is formed from a plurality of alternating inwardly and outwardly extending corrugations. The sealing lips extend inwardly into resilient engagement with the splines formed on male splined steering shaft member. The metallic band is provided to maintain the resilient engagement with the splines formed on male splined steering shaft member. The sealing lips are urged into engagement with a higher friction portion of the male splined steering shaft member during normal use, wherein only a small amount of relative axial movement occurs between the male and female splined steering shaft members. However, when the male and female splined steering shaft members are telescopically extended by a relatively large amount, the sealing lips are moved axially off of the higher friction portion of the male splined steering shaft member.

    摘要: A steering box for a motor vehicle comprises a rotatable toothed pinion, an axially movable rack within a casing, and a support unit to support the thrust which the pinion applies to the rack during operation. The support unit comprises a rotatable roller operable to support the rack. The roller is provided with an axial hold in which is formed a pair of rolling tracks for rolling bodies. A pair of rings are disposed within the hole in contact with one another, each forming with the roller the rolling tracks for the rolling bodies. Two rings of the rolling bodies are disposed between the roller and the rings. A pin supports the rings. The pin is mounted in a cylindrical body provided with a central cavity operable to house the roller, at least patially. The cylindrical body is provided with a pair of slots each of which is able to receive one end of the pin.
