Abstract:
A data storage device has a shock sense indicator disposed within its housing. The shock sense indicator may provide visible, audible, and/or machine-detectable indication of whether the data storage device has been subjected to a physical shock over some threshold. Machine detection of the shock state can be accomplished optically, mechanically, or electrically. A data storage drive has a detection switch that interfaces with a shock detector of a data storage device to ensure that no harmful operation is performed on a data storage device that has been subjected to a physical shock, thereby avoiding potential loss or corruption of data.
Abstract:
Isolated nucleic acids encoding zeatin O-glucosyltransferase are disclosed. These nucleic acid molecules are useful, among other things, to produce transgenic plants having modified zeatin O-glucosyltransferase activity.
Abstract:
A film-forming composition, typically a topcoat, having improved adhesion to certain commercially available adhesives. The composition includes a curable film-forming polymer, typically an acrylic and/or a polyester polymer, with carbamate and/or urea groups. The composition further includes a material containing one or more hydrolyzable silyl groups. The hydrolyzable silyl group-containing material optionally can be a polymeric or oligomeric. Also disclosed are a method of applying the above-described film-forming composition to a substrate and the coated article prepared by such a method.
Abstract:
An underground storm shelter comprising a bottom section, expander section and a top section bolted together to form the shelter. The base section has a closed bottom while the top section has an access hatch formed in the upper end thereof. The base section, expander section and top section are bolted together at the installation site. The walls of the base section and the top section are tapered to enable the base section and the top section to be nested during shipment. The expander section may be slipped over the top section.
Abstract:
An improved window covering and lighting system for a window in a room includes a plurality of cornices, each cornice including a window covering supported by the cornice and movable between an open position and a closed position, an actuator supported by the cornice for moving the window covering between the open position and the closed position, a lighting system mounted to the cornice, and a programmable logic unit for operating at least one of the actuator and the lighting system independently from one another upon demand. The system also includes a remote control unit providing a signal selectively to the programmable logic unit to operate at least one of the plurality of cornices. Each of the plurality of cornices further includes a light sensor for sensing ambient light conditions in the room, and a motion detector for detecting occupance of the room. The programmable logic control unit is responsive to the sensed ambient light conditions and the detected occupance.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for laser etching of optical servo patterns on magnetic data storage media using two or more beams of laser energy produced from a single source of laser energy to produce a servo pattern on the magnetic data storage media. By using two or more etching beams, the time required to produce a servo pattern on the magnetic data storage media can be significantly reduced. Alternatively, each servo track in the servo pattern can be written more than once. The servo patterns thus formed can be read optically or they may be read magnetically using magnetic overwriting (if the servo pattern is formed in a magnetic coating on the media). In either case, the servo patterns are either permanently formed in the media when read optically, or they can be recreated after bulk erasing if they are provided using magnetic overwriting. In yet another alternative, the servo patterns may be read both magnetically and optically, with the magnetic and optical reading occurring simultaneously or sequentially.
Abstract:
A technique for clustering data points in a data set that is arranged as a matrix having n objects and m attributes. Each categorical attribute of the data set is converted to a 1-of-p representation of the categorical attribute. A converted data set A is formed based on the data set and the 1-of-p representation for each categorical attribute. The converted data set A is compressed using, for example, a Goal Directed Projection compression technique or a Singular Value Decomposition compression technique, to obtain q basis vectors, with q being defined to be at least m+1. The transformed data set is projected onto the q basis vectors to form a data matrix having at least one vector, with each vector having q dimensions. Lastly, a clustering technique is performed on the data matrix having vectors having q dimensions.
Abstract:
A method and product which provides a solid, non-powdered homogeneous form to liquid and low melting point solid compounds which facilitates stability, storage, dispersability and handling and which may be added directly to formulations requiring the liquid compound or low melting point solid compound. The liquid or low melting point solid ingredient is combined with a binder which is comprised of at least a wax and thermoplastic polymer. During the method of forming the product, both the binder and the liquid compound (or low melting point solid compound) pass through a liquid phase during which they are mixed. The product is then formed and cooled.
