The present invention provides an improved multi-layer composite of two or more polymeric layers at least one of which is formed from a thermosetting composition. The composite includes at least a first polymeric layer formed on a substrate and a second polymeric layer over the first polymeric layer, wherein in the absence of a boron-containing compound, the first and second polymeric layers have poor interlayer adhesion. The improvement resides in the inclusion of at least one boron-containing compound in one or both of the first and second polymeric layers in an amount sufficient to improve the interlayer adhesion between the first and second polymeric layers. Also provided is an improved curable coating composition used to form a multi-layer composite coating of two or more cured coating layers, at least one of which is formed from the thermosetting composition. Related methods and coated substrates are also provided.

Flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming compositions and multi-component composite coating compositions comprising at least one pigmented or colored base coat and at least one transparent clear coat are disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a clear coat to the base coat. Both the colored base coat and the clear coat are flexible, curable film-forming compositions having an aminoplast crosslinking agent, and the base coat and optionally the clear coat has carbamate functional polymers. The flexible, multi-component composite coating compositions provide improved durability, water spotting resistance, and/or acid etch resistance, making the composite coatings particularly useful for plastic automotive parts.

Described are photochromic epoxy resin coatings that meet commercially acceptable “cosmetic” standards for optical coatings. Also described are articles having such coatings. The coatings exhibit a Fischer microhardness of from 50 to 150 Newtons per mm2 and desirable photochromic properties, i.e., the formation of darker activated colors and faster rates of photochromic activation and fade when irradiated with ultraviolet light.

Disclosed are compositions comprised of (a)a polymer containing pendant and/or functional groups selected from the group consisting of carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional groups; and (b) a rheology modifier comprising the reaction product of an amine and an isocyanate; and, optionally, a polymer which is different from the polymer (a) which contains carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional groups. Also disclosed are curable compositions comprised of the compositions described above which further comprise (c) a curing agent having functional groups reactive with the functional groups of the polymer (a). The curable compositions are useful for a variety of applications such as adhesives, sealants and surface coatings where the presence of a carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional polymer in conjunction with the rheology modifier provides improved thixotropy and superior sag resistance.
