    摘要: An electronic display is formed using an array of hollow tubes filled with an electrophoretic material sandwiched between two plates. The hollow tubes have either barrier walls or an electrostatic barrier, which restrict the flow of electrophoretic particles within the hollow tubes. The flow of electrophoretic particles over these barriers is controlled using electric fields, which makes it possible to matrix address the electrophoretic displays. Wire electrodes built into the hollow tubes and electrodes on the two plates are used to address the display. The plates are preferably composed of glass, glass-ceramic, polymer/plastic or metal, while the hollow tubes are preferably composed of glass, polymer/plastic or a combination of glass and polymer/plastic. Color is optionally imparted into the display using colored tubes, adding a color coating to the surface of the tubes, or adding the color to the electrophoretic material. Reflectivity within the display is accomplished by using a reflective material to fabricate the tubes, coating the tubes with a reflective material or coating one of the two plates with a reflective material. The display can also function in a transmissive mode by applying an illuminating back to the display.

    摘要: A plasma addressed display device includes a flat panel, a scanning circuit and a signal circuit. The flat panel is of a superimposed structure of a plasma cell having scanning electrodes in a row configuration and a display cell having scanning electrodes in a column configuration. The scanning circuit sequentially applies selection pulses to the scanning electrode to scan the display panel. The signal circuit writes the picture data in the signal electrode in synchronism with this scanning. On the plasma cells, there are formed reciprocally isolated discharge channels in a row configuration. To each discharge channel, charged with an electrically dischargeable gas, are allotted plural scanning electrodes. As characteristic of the present invention, the scanning circuit sequentially applies the selection pulses to the scanning electrode allotted to a sole discharge channel to produce electrical discharge to form at least two scanning lines to a sole discharge channel. This realizes a high open area ratio and high resolution of the plasma addressed display device.

    摘要: A liquid crystal display (LCD) using a plasma addressing method includes a sequentially arranged face plate, intermediary plate, and rear plate separated from each other by predetermined distances; a liquid crystal portion including a liquid crystal material between said face and intermediary plates for displaying an image in accordance with the arrangement of the liquid crystal material; and a plasma portion formed by sealing a discharge gas between the intermediary and rear plates for rearranging the liquid crystal material by adjusting the discharging state of the discharge gas. The LCD has AC voltage-supply parallel column electrodes on the inner surface of the face plate for supplying a constant frequency AC voltage, data signal-supply anodes on the inner surface of the rear plate for supplying data signals, and line scanning signal-supplying cathodes insulated from and at right angles to the data signal-supply anodes on the inner surface of the rear plate for supplying line scanning signals. A driving method of the display is also provided. Both the liquid crystal portion and the plasma addressing portion can be driven by just one driving IC which reduces manufacturing cost and enhances the display's response.
