Abstract:
The described system and method uses data from interaction between a known wave and an unknown wave to analyze or characterize the unknown wave using cross correlation frequency resolved optical gating (X-FROG). The system may obtain X-FROG trace data from the interaction between the two waves. The system analyzes the X-FROG trace data using a modified principal component generalized projection method strategy to invert the X-FROG trace data, analyzing or characterizing the unknown wave. Results of the analysis can be provided in real time and displayed.
Abstract:
Pulsed, coherent light is generated by optical mixing which takes place inside the resonator of a pulsed laser oscillator. One of the beams to be mixed is generated by the pulsed laser, and the other by a distinct, external laser oscillator. If the light from the external oscillator is modulated, that modulation will be transferred onto the light generated by the optical mixing. This enables modulated light at an expanded range of wavelengths. Using sum frequency generation, light for sodium excitation, such as for a guide star, can be generated with the optimal modulation of spectral and temporal properties. If the type of optical mixing is difference frequency generation, optical parametric amplifiers with improved efficiency and beam quality are enabled.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for article authentication include an exciting radiation generator that exposes an area of the article to exciting radiation, and at least two radiation detectors that detect emitted radiation from the area in a first band and in a second band that does not overlap the first band. The first band corresponds with a first emission sub-band of an emitting ion, and the second band corresponds with a second emission sub-band of the same emitting ion. A processing system calculates a comparison value that represents a mathematical relationship (e.g., a ratio) between a first intensity of the emitted radiation in the first band with a second intensity of the emitted radiation in the second band, and determines whether the comparison value compares favorably with an authentication parameter. When the comparison value compares favorably with the authentication parameter, the article is identified as being authentic.
Abstract:
A printed dynamic optical illusion printed on a printing device using a plurality of colorants, wherein one or more of the colorants are appearance mutable colorants having spectral characteristics that can be controllably switched between a first colorant state and a second colorant state by application of an appropriate external stimulus, and wherein one or more mutable portions of the optical illusion image are printed using at least one appearance mutable colorant. The mutable portions are controllable such that when they are in a first appearance state the printed optical illusion image has a first illusion state, and when they are in a second appearance state the printed optical illusion image has a second illusion state, thereby changing the optical illusion image from the first illusion state to the second illusion state so as to affect the perception of an optical illusion by a human observer.
Abstract:
An authentication apparatus used to authenticate a moving value document with uniform or non-uniform distribution of a pre-selected covert composition that includes an active ion that emits optical radiation at a pre-selected wavelength when excited by exciting incident light. The optical radiation is imaged onto at least one photodetector having first and second detector elements. The imaged intensities are captured at pre-determined times relating to the velocity of the value document. The ratio between the second detector element and the first detector element measured at the same image location or different image locations represents the characteristic decay time intensity data of the pre-selected wavelength emission. The authenticity of the value document is rejected when the pre-selected wavelength emission is not received by the at least one photodetector or when the output electronic signal ratio does not meet expected value.
Abstract:
Gravity flow for liquids evacuation from hose with the use of this specially designed drum with spiral grooves for coiling. Spring loaded allows reel to self wind hose with swivel connectors at the inlet for preventing tangling and crimping. A check valve is added to allow pressure relief so that liquids can self drain therefore making sure there are no liquids left in hose that could freeze.
Abstract:
A method of enabling a knowledge management community. A community is originated based on a vision of values and benefits that can be realized from the organized sharing of knowledge within a common group of people. The group is defined based on subject matter, interest, geography, or any other category. Based on the vision of a community, an initial definition of the community is created, including a community charter. Based on the community charter, the community is designed. The design of the community includes creating a matrix showing processes performed by members of the community and the outcomes of these processes, developing knowledge maps that show the knowledge used and created in performing processes, and defining metrics to measure the benefit derived from the sharing of knowledge within the community.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a culture medium container such as a bag comprising a main compartment and a locus of containment that contains a nutrient concentrate until it is released at the time of use. The locus of containment may comprise separated compartments defined by frangible seals or seals comprising a water-reactive material. Sachets comprising frangible seals or a water-reactive material are also suitable for the locus of containment. Matrices and coatings comprising water-reactive material are also suitable. Capsules that can be pulverized and/or dissolved may also be used.

Abstract:
The invention provides methods, compositions, and apparatus for performing sensitive detection of analytes, such as biological macromolecules and other analytes, by labeling a probe molecule with an up-converting label. The up-converting label absorbs radiation from an illumination source and emits radiation at one or more higher frequencies, providing enhanced signal-to-noise ratio and the essential elimination of background sample autofluorescence. The methods, compositions, and apparatus are suitable for the sensitive detection of multiple analytes and for various clinical and environmental sampling techniques.
