摘要: The invention offers the ability to rapidly synthesize multiple chemical compounds, particularly polymers of varying sequences, in parallel on the surfaces of carrier beads. Tinvention involves attaching up-converting phosphors (UCP's) to beads to create up-converting phosphor-loaded beads (UCP-loaded beads) with unique spectral characteristics. Using a dynamic sorting architecture each bead is cataloged based on its spectral characteristics, assigned a compound or polymer to be synthesized, and subjected to multiple rounds of sorting by a flow cytometer, wherein each round sorts the bead to an appropriate bin for a selected chemical reaction, such as the attachment of a monomeric subunit of the polymer sequence.

摘要: RF modulation spectroscopy of a near-infrared tunable laser diode source is used to determine the oxygen concentration in a sample medium. A reference cell containing a known concentration of oxygen is used to calibrate the apparatus as well as to lock the laser on an oxygen absorption line. The temperature of the reference cell is monitored from which the pressure in the reference cell can be determined. Both the temperature and the pressure in the sample cell are monitored, either directly using independent transducers or indirectly using spectroscopic techniques. The oxygen content of the sample is determined, correcting for both temperature and pressure effects.

摘要: A sleep awakening device awakens drivers of motor vehicles who are falling asleep while driving. The sleep awakening device includes a pair of eyeglasses and a control unit electrically connected thereto to provide both visual and audible warnings to alert a driver who is falling asleep. The pair of eyeglasses include a sensing lever that is in constant contact with one of the driver's upper eyelid muscles. Downward motion of the eyelid moves the sensing lever downward and actuates a microswitch that is coupled to the sensing lever. The microswitch in turn actuates circuitry located in the control unit to turn on a light each time the driver closes his eyelid. The circuitry includes a time delay relay that initiates an audible signal if the eyelid remains closed for a preset period of time. A normal blink of a driver's eye does not produce an audible alarm. However, if the driver's eyelid fails to open in a predetermined time, the audible alarm will sound. As soon as the driver's eyelid opens, a yellow caution light and the audible alarm are reset. Normal eye blinks produce illumination of the yellow caution light in view of the driver, thereby assuring the driver that the sleep awakening device is functioning properly.

摘要: RF modulation spectroscopy of a near infrared laser diode source is used to determine the amount of a target substance in a breath sample. In this type of modulation the laser output is modulated to produce sidebands displaced from the laser carrier by the modulation frequency. The modulated beam is passed through a gas sample which differentially absorbs the sidebands, the result of which is the conversion of some of the laser frequency modulation into amplitude modulation which is subsequently detected using a broadband photodetector. In certain tests, the target substance is a particular isotope, whose concentration is measured as an isotope ratio. In order to measure the presence of first and second isotopic species, provision is made to provide laser illumination at characteristic wavelengths for absorption lines for the first and second isotopic species of the gas. This may sometimes be accomplished using a single laser diode and scanning at least one of its operating parameters in order to achieve one of the wavelength difference. Alternatively, first and second laser diodes operating at the first and second wavelengths are used.

摘要: This specification discloses a method and apparatus for the mobile and remote detection of a gas, such as methane, in the atmosphere. The apparatus includes a TDL based Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) driven at carrier frequency lying within the absorption line of the gas. The apparatus also drives the TDL with a modulation frequency to generate upper and lower sidebands in the output of the TDL and with a low ramp frequency to sweep the output of the TDL across twice the width of the pressure-broadened absorption line of the gas, preferably the first overtone absorption line in the case of methane detection. The apparatus include reference and calibration cells or chambers, and includes a light collector and detectors to detect the quantity and modulation of the light that passes the reference or calibration cells and that is received by the apparatus after reflection back toward the apparatus from an uncooperative target. The apparatus further includes a signal processor that applies a derivative spectroscopy technique, such as frequency modulation spectroscopy or wavelength modulation spectroscopy, to determine the presence of the gas in the atmosphere.

摘要: Various embodiments of a circuit device for detecting the presence of unwanted conductor structures in insulation structure seams and methods of making the same are provided. In one aspect, a circuit device is provided that includes an insulating structure positioned on a substrate and a first conductor structure that has a first member positioned on the insulating structure. A second conductor structure is provided that has a second member positioned on the insulating structure. The second member projects toward the first conductor structure and the first member projects toward the second conductor structure, but the first and second conductor structures are not in physical contact. A current flowing between the first and second conductor structures when a bias is applied between the first and second conductor structures is indicative of a third conductor structure present on the insulating structure and contacting the first and second members.
