Hydrocarbon feeds are upgraded by contacting a feed, at elevated temperature and in the presence of hydrogen, with a self-promoted catalyst prepared by heating one or more catalyst precursors under oxygen-free conditions in the presence of sulfur at a temperature of at least about 150.degree. C. The catalyst precursors will be one or more compounds of the formula (ML)(Mo.sub.y W.sub.1-y S.sub.4) wherein M comprises one or more divalent promoter metals selected from the group consisting of Ni, Co, Zn, Cu and mixtures thereof, wherein y is any value ranging from 0 to 1 and wherein L is one or more neutral, nitrogen-containing ligands at least one of which is a chelating, polydentate ligand.

Supported, hydroprocessing catalysts comprising a sulfide of (i) trivalent chromium, (ii) Mo, W or mixture thereof and (iii) at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, Zn and mixture thereof and mixture thereof with Fe. These catalysts are made by compositing a preselected quantity of support material with a precursor comprising a mixture of (i) hydrated oxide of trivalent chromium and (ii) a salt containing a thiometallate anion of Mo or W and a cation comprising at least one divalent promoter metal chelated by at least one, neutral, nitrogen-containing polydentate ligand and heating the composite in the presence of sulfur and hydrogen in an oxygen-free atmosphere. These catalysts have been found to be useful hydrotreating catalysts having nitrogen removal activity superior to that of commercial catalysts such as sulfided cobalt-molybdate on alumina.

In processes for the catalytic treatment of hydrocarbon feedstream containing organic sulfur comprising contacting said feedstream with a catalyst for a time at a temperature and pressure sufficient to effect the desired catalytic change on the feedstream, the improvement comprising using as the catalyst a layered composition of the formula MX.sub.y wherein M is a transition metal selected from the group consisting of Group IVb, Vb, VIb, VIIb and uranium, X is a chalcogen selected from the group consisting of sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and mixtures thereof, y is a number ranging from about 1.5 to about 3. The catalyst is prepared by reacting neat or in the presence of a nonaqueous solvent a Group IVb to VIIb or uranium metal salt, and a source of sulfide, selenide or telluride ions, and mixing the reactants at temperatures below 400.degree. C. and at atmospheric pressures. The catalyst may be isolated by filtration and washing with excess solvent (when one is used) or by vacuum pumping any volatile coproduced anion salt. Preferably the chalcogenide is sulfur and y is about 1.5 to about 2.The catalytic processes which are benefited by the use therein of the above-described compositions are hydrodesulfurization, hydrodenitrogenation, hydroconversion and hydrogenation run in the presence of hydrogen or a hydrogen donor solvent.

Dichalcogenides of Group IVb, Vb, molybdenum and tungsten of two new forms have been discovered. The two new forms are the amorphous and layered-sheet configurations. In particular, the dichalcogenides of Group IVb, Ib, molybdenum and tungsten, i.e. Z(MX.sub.2).sub.n wherein M is the metal and X is the chalcogen, n is at least about 20,000 and Z is the number of such (MX.sub.2).sub.n sheets ranging from 1-10, can be described as possessing a "rag-like" structure representing a system consisting of single or several stacked but randomly folded and disordered layers or sheets having dimensions (as determined by TEM) corresponding to about 6.2 to 62 A in thickness, about 500 A minimum length by about 500 A minimum width. Broadly the rag-like (MX.sub.2).sub.n can be likened to a stack of polymer sheets wherein each sheet is one atom thick. These sheets of (MX.sub.2).sub.n are prepared by the controlled heating (in a flowing stream of H.sub.2 /H.sub.2 S) of amorphous MX.sub.2 obtained by the monaqueous low temperature precipitation of MX.sub.2 from mixtures of the metal salt and sources of sulfur, selenium or tellurium.

The present invention is directed to a method of making a cathode, comprising:(a) forming cathode structure of a predetermined shape with a mixture comprising:(i) about 50 to about 100% by weight of one or more ammonium metal chalcogen compounds and complexes, wherein said metal is selected from the group consisting of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Nb, Mo, Ta, and W, and wherein said chalcogen is selected from the group consisting of O, S, and Se; and(ii) about 50 to about 0% by weight of a binder; and(b) thermally decomposing and thereby activating said cathode structure at a temperature of about 200.degree. to about 500.degree. C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
