Abstract: An optical film includes a plurality of alternating first and second polymeric layers, such that the first polymeric layers have a smaller average in-plane index of refraction than the second polymeric layers and the first polymeric layers have a glass transition temperature of at least 107 deg. C. The optical film may be a reflective polarizer. An optical stack includes a linear absorbing polarizer and the reflective polarizer disposed on, and bonded to, the absorbing polarizer. The reflective polarizer has an optical reflectance of at least 60% for a first polarization state and an optical transmittance of at least 60% for an orthogonal second polarization state. When heated at 105 deg. C. for 15 minutes, a difference in shrinkage of the reflective polarizer and the absorbing polarizer along the first and second polarization states is greater than about zero and 0.2%, respectively.

Abstract: A protective assembly including a singly-curved optically clear substrate and a laser-protective stack adhesively laminated to the substrate. The laser-protective stack includes a multilayer optical film configured to exhibit a light-transmission of 10% or less in a preselected wavelength range of the visible spectrum; the laser-protective stack will nevertheless exhibit an overall transmission of at least 60% over the visible spectrum. The laser-protective stack may also include an optically clear pressure-sensitive adhesive that adhesively bonds the multilayer optical film to the substrate, and may also include an optically clear physical-protection layer in front of the multilayer optical film.

Abstract: A multilayer optical film includes a plurality of alternating polymeric first and second layers numbering at least 20 in total. The polymeric first layers include between about 10% and 50% by weight of polyethylene terephthalate and between about 50% and 90% by weight of polyethylene naphthalate. For a substantially normally incident light and for a visible wavelength range, the multilayer optical film has respective average optical transmissions of between about 10% and 30% when the incident light is polarized along a first direction and greater than about 60% when the incident light is polarized along an in-plane orthogonal second direction. For a p-polarized incident light and for at least one wavelength in an infrared wavelength range, the multilayer optical film has optical transmissions T1 and T2 for respective incident angles of less than about 10 degrees and greater than about 40 degrees, wherein T2−T1 is less than about 40%.

Abstract: A multilayer optical film includes a plurality of alternating polymeric first and second layers and optically absorptive material dispersed in at least one layer of the multilayer optical film. The multilayer optical film has an average optical transmittance in a visible wavelength range extending from about 450 nm to about 650 nm of about 0.5% to about 40%, an average optical reflectance in the visible wavelength range of less than about 40%, and an average optical reflectance in an infrared wavelength range extending from about 850 nm to about 1200 nm of greater than about 60%. For illuminant D65 light incident on the multilayer optical film, the multilayer optical film reflects and transmits portions of the incident light as reflected and transmitted lights that have color shifts below specified limits in a CIE L*a*b* color space. A glass laminate includes the multilayer optical film disposed between glass layers.

Abstract: A mirror system for a side- or rear-view mirror of a vehicle includes a light absorbing layer and an optical film having a plurality of layers disposed on the light absorbing layer. For substantially normally incident light and a blue, green, and red wavelength range extending from about 420-485 nm, 525-575 nm and 625-740 nm, respectively, and for at least one polarization state, the plurality of layers includes a reflection band having a substantially flat top region at least 100 nm wide. The reflection band includes left and right band edges at respective short and long wavelength sides. The plurality of layers has an average optical reflectance R1 of greater than about 70% and a standard of deviation of less than about 5% in the substantially flat top region. An average optical reflectance Rb is less than about 0.8R1 in the blue wavelength range.

Abstract: A heads-up display for viewing by an eye of a passenger of a vehicle includes a windshield with a reflective polarizer disposed adjacent to a first outermost glass surface of the windshield, a display configured to emit an image toward the windshield, the windshield reflecting between 15% and 85% of the emitted image toward the passenger, and a phase retarding plate disposed in an optical path between the display and the windshield. The windshield is configured to receive the image emitted by the display after the image has been transmitted by the phase retarding plate and to reflect at least a portion of the received image as a reflected image toward the eye of the passenger. The phase retarding plate modifies a polarization state of the reflected image to improve a viewing characteristic of the reflective image depending on a viewing angle of the eye of the passenger.
