Abstract: Scenes in video images are identified based on image content of the video images. Regional cross sections of the video images are determined based on the scenes in the video images. Image portions of the video images in the regional cross sections are encoded into multiple video sub-streams at multiple different spatiotemporal resolutions. An overall video stream that includes the multiple video sub-streams is transmitted to a streaming client device.

Abstract: View direction data of the viewer is collected in real time while the viewer is viewing a first reconstructed omnidirectional image. The view direction data is sent to the video streaming server to cause generating image layers from an omnidirectional image in reference to a view direction of the viewer. The image layers comprising a focal-vision image layer and a peripheral-vision image layer. A second reconstructed omnidirectional image is generated from the image layers. The second reconstructed omnidirectional image is subsequently rendered to the viewer.

Abstract: A wearable device for augmented media content experiences can be formed with a mountable physical structure that has removably mountable positions and component devices that are removably mounted through the removably mountable positions. The component devices can be specifically selected based on a specific type of content consumption environment in which the wearable device is to operate. The mountable physical structure may be subject to a device washing process to which the component devices are not subject to, after the wearable device including the mountable physical structure and the component devices is used by a viewer in a content consumption session in the specific type of content consumption environment, so long as the component devices are subsequently removed from the mountable physical structure.

Abstract: Spatial information that describes spatial locations of visual objects as in a three-dimensional (3D) image space as represented in one or more multi-view unlayered images is accessed. Based on the spatial information, a cinema image layer and one or more device image layers are generated from the one or more multi-view unlayered images. A multi-layer multi-view video signal comprising the cinema image layer and the device image layers is sent to downstream devices for rendering.

Abstract: An overall displacement tolerance applicable to each pixel tile in a plurality of pixel tiles to be used as parts of an image rendering surface is determined. Each pixel tile in the plurality of pixel tiles comprises a plurality of sub-pixels. Random displacements are generated in each pixel tile in the plurality of pixel tiles based on the overall displacement tolerance. The plurality of image rendering tiles with the random displacements are combined into the image rendering surface.

Abstract: A target view to a 3D scene depicted by a multiview image is determined. The multiview image comprising sampled views at sampled view positions distributed throughout a viewing volume. Each sampled view in the sampled views comprises a wide-field-of-view (WFOV) image and a WFOV depth map as seen from a respective sampled view position in the sampled view positions. The target view is used to select, from the sampled views, a set of sampled views. A display image is caused to be rendered on a display of a wearable device. The display image is generated based on a WFOV image and a WFOV depth map for each sampled view in the set of sampled views.

Abstract: Techniques are provided to encode and decode image data comprising a tone mapped (TM) image with HDR reconstruction data in the form of luminance ratios and color residual values. In an example embodiment, luminance ratio values and residual values in color channels of a color space are generated on an individual pixel basis based on a high dynamic range (HDR) image and a derivative tone-mapped (TM) image that comprises one or more color alterations that would not be recoverable from the TM image with a luminance ratio image. The TM image with HDR reconstruction data derived from the luminance ratio values and the color-channel residual values may be outputted in an image file to a downstream device, for example, for decoding, rendering, and/or storing. The image file may be decoded to generate a restored HDR image free of the color alterations.

Abstract: A first and a second light valve control values are derived for a first and a second frames, respectively, in a specific region of a display panel based on image data of the first and second frames. It is determined whether a difference between the first and second light valve control values exceeds a light valve control threshold. If so, a light source driving waveform is constructed to comprise a sequence of light source control pulses for controlling one or more light sources designated to illuminate the specific region of the display panel. The sequence of light source control pulses is constrained to start at a start time plus a transition time interval. The transition time interval allows light valves in the specific region of the display panel to complete a transition between the first and second light valve control values.
