The structure for a closely spaced, coplanar tape head array is disclosed. Narrow pitch is obtained by utilizing an overlapping coil structure, wherein write coils of adjacent heads overlap. A slider fabrication assembly and method for making the same are provided. A slider is formed on a substrate. A corrodible component of the slider is exposed to an environment in contact with the slider. A kerf region of the substrate is positioned adjacent to the slider. The kerf region is removable from the slider. A sacrificial anode is embedded in the kerf region and exposed to the environment. The sacrificial anode is electrically coupled to the corrodible component of the slider thereby forming an electrochemical cell. The sacrificial anode is less noble, i.e., more corrodible, than the corrodible slider component, and thus corrodes first. When the kerf region is removed, the corroded sacrificial anode is removed as well.

An low profile inductive write head is provided to improve track definition and head efficiency and to reduce overcoat and pole tip protrusion and cracking caused by thermal expansion. A first insulation layer of an insulation stack enclosing the coil layer is formed of an non-magnetic inorganic insulator material such as aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide or titanium dioxide having a thickness of in the range of 0.2-0.3 microns. The thinner first insulation layer results in a significantly reduced slope of the insulation stack which decreases reflective notching during processing of the second pole tip to improve track definition. Improved thermal conduction properties of the inorganic insulator material improves heat sinking of the write coil reducing overcoat and pole tip protrusion and cracking at the pole tip/write gap layer interface.

The thin film magnetic head of the present invention includes an improved P2 pole tip/yoke interface structure. The interface structure includes yoke material that is formed in a concave curved shape at the interface between the P2 pole tip and the yoke, such that a right angle interface between the P2 pole tip and the yoke is eliminated. The process for forming the P2 pole tip/yoke interface includes a second CMP polishing step that is performed on the surface of the write head wafer subsequent to the plating of the P2 pole tip thereon, and subsequent to a first CMP step. This second CMP step utilizes a relatively soft polishing pad and an acidic polishing slurry having a pH within the range of approximately 1 to approximately 5, and preferably approximately 2.5. The acidic polishing slurry contains a chemical agent which preferentially attacks the P2 pole tip material, such that the second CMP step results in the recession of the upper surface of the P2 pole tip relative to the dielectric layer surrounding it, as well as the significant rounding of the upper edges of the dielectric trench in which the P2 pole tip is formed. Thereafter, when the yoke is plated onto the P2 pole tip the rounded upper edges of the dielectric trench result in a concave curved interface between the yoke and the P2 pole tip. The resulting P2 pole tip/yoke interface possesses improved magnetic flux flow control properties and results in decreased side writing. Greater track per inch areal data storage results from the reduced side writing of the improved write head.

Test methods and components are disclosed for testing resistances of helical coils formed in magnetic recording heads. Helical coils in magnetic recording heads include a bottom coil structure, a top coil structure, and connecting structures that electrically connect the top and bottom coil structures. A test component is fabricated on the wafer along with the magnetic recording heads. The test component includes a bottom coil structure connected in series, and includes a top coil structure connected in series which is electrically disconnected from the bottom coil structure. Resistances of the top and bottom coil structures are measured in the test component. A total resistance of a helical coil is also measured. The resistance of the connecting structures in the helical coil may then be determined based on the resistance of the bottom coil structure, the resistance of the top coil structure, and the total resistance of the helical coil.
