    Abstract: A self-healing passive optical network is disclosed. The network includes a central office and a remote node connected to the central office through a main optical fiber. The remote node transmits one portion of power of the upstream optical signal, which has been input from each of the optical network units, to the central office, and returning a remaining portion of the power of the upstream optical signal to the optical network unit. The network also includes a plurality of optical network units connected to the remote node through a plurality of distribution optical fibers. Each of the optical network units transmits an upstream optical signal to the remote node through the directly connected distribution optical fiber, and detects abnormality occurrences from a state of the upstream optical signal returning from the remote node.

    Abstract: An apparatus for canceling an echo signal in a mobile terminal of a mobile communication system. A double talk detector (DTD) receives a first signal by canceling an estimated echo signal from a signal received through a microphone, outputs the first signal, and outputs the first and a second signal comprising a background noise signal and a residual echo signal during a non-double talk. An Auto-Regressive (AR) analysis and inverse filtering unit receives the second signal from the DTD, and whitens the second signal. A pitch analysis and inverse filtering unit receives the whitened signal, and cancels a pitch value remaining therein by performing pitch analysis and inverse filtering on the whitened signal. A noise canceller receives the pitch-cancelled whitened signal and the first signal output from the DTD, canceling a residual echo signal and a background noise signal from the first signal using the pitch-cancelled whitened signal.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for human activity and facial expression modeling and recognition are based on feature extraction techniques from time sequential images. The human activity modeling includes determining principal components of depth and/or binary shape images of human activities extracted from video clips. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) representations are determined based on the principal components. Features are determined through Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) based on the ICA representations. A codebook is determined using vector quantization. Observation symbol sequences in the video clips are determined. And human activities are learned using the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based on status transition and an observation matrix.
