Image data photographed by a video camera 20 is compressed by a compression and decompression circuit 5, the compressed image data is recorded in an incorporated type semiconductor memory 6 or disk-type memory 13 fixed in the video camera 20 and the recorded image data is transferred to an external recording device 23. Further, the external recording device 23 records the transferred image data in a data storage while it is being compressed. The video camera 20 receives, decompresses and converts into a television signal the compressed image data read by the external recording device 23 in a reproducing operation. A video camera system capable of recording and reproducing long hours of image data by using a video camera having an ultra small size comparable to that of an 8 mm video cassette can be realized by using such a construction.

An image signal provided by an image pickup device, such as a CCD, is converted into a video signal by a signal processor. An extraction means extracts a candidate object region from the current video signal and an object region determined a certain time before by a decision means is read from a memory. For example, the decision means compares an overlapping region in which the candidate object region and the object region read from the memory overlap each other and provides a new object region a size larger than the overlapping region and replace the object region with the new object region to update the contents of the memory. On the other hand, a calculating means calculates the features of the object region including the position of the centroid of the object region on a screen. A control means, such as a microcomputer, controls the image pick up device on the basis of information about the features so that a region including the target object substantially in its central part is cut out as a video signal. Consequently, the target object can be surely tracked regardless of objects other than the target object included in a scene.

Further, while the driving of the horizontal CCD is stopped, the vertical CCDs are driven by a third scanning pulse having a higher frequency than the frequency of the first scanning pulse so that charges stored in the pixels in the effective pixel area outside the scanning pixel area are transferred at high speed to the horizontal CCD of which driving is stopped. The charges transferred from the vertical CCDs to the horizontal CCD at high speed are swept out of the horizontal CCD.

In an imager including a sensor of solid state type having photo-elements arranged with a matrix configuration wherein electrical signals are read out from the photo-elements in two-row-at-a-time, the electrical signals are read out from 1st and 2nd rows for the 1st scan line of a display picture, from 3rd and 4th rows for the 2nd scan line, and so forth. In order to obtain a zoomed up picture of an area of a part of the matrix configuration of the photo-elements, there is provided a memory having storage locations whose number is equal to that of the photo-elements in the area to be zoomed up, each location being capable of storing the electrical signal from each photo-element and a circuit for reading out the memory row by row. The circuit reads locations in 1st and 2nd rows for the 1st scan line, in 2nd and 3rd rows for the 2nd scan line, and so forth. If the area comprises M rows, the numbers of the scan line obtained from the area are M/2 when a video signal is produced from the signal read out from the sensor and M when the video signal is produced from the signal read out from the sensor. Therefore, a picture display enlarged in the vertical direction is obtained.
