Disclosed is a method for injection molding certain hydrodisintegratable materials which, when injection molded to form a desired object, acquire and maintain the desired shape. The method includes the steps of maintaining extrusion temperatures of the hydrodisintegratable material at or below about 250 degrees F. and maintaining the temperature of the mold at or below about 55 degrees F. In the presence of water, the molded object has the ability to rapidly disintegrate and disperse when subjected to standardized agitation testing.

An ultrasonic apparatus and method for regulating the flow of a pressurized liquid through an orifice by applying ultrasonic energy to a portion of the pressurized liquid. The apparatus includes a die housing which defines a chamber adapted to receive a pressurized liquid and a means for applying ultrasonic energy to a portion of the pressurized liquid. The die housing further includes an inlet adapted to supply the chamber with the pressurized liquid, and an exit orifice defined by the walls of a die tip. The exit orifice is adapted to receive the pressurized liquid from the chamber and pass the liquid out of the die housing. When the means for applying ultrasonic energy is excited, it applies ultrasonic energy to the pressurized liquid without applying ultrasonic energy to the die tip and modifies the flow rate of the pressurized liquid the exit orifice. The method involves supplying a pressurized liquid to the foregoing apparatus, applying ultrasonic energy to the pressurized liquid but not the die tip while the exit orifice receives pressurized liquid from the chamber to modify the flow rate of the pressurized liquid through the exit orifice, and passing the pressurized liquid out of the exit orifice in the die tip at the modified flow rate.

A nonwoven web laminate having improved particulate barrier properties, and particularly improved particulate barrier properties for particles in the size range of between 0.19 microns and 0.5 microns, is provided. The particulate barrier properties are improved by subjecting one or more of the layers forming the nonwoven web laminate to corona discharge. The improved particulate barrier properties are further achieved without substantially altering or increasing the amount of surface charge on the nonwoven web laminate.

A wet wipe which includes a pattern bonded polypropylene nonwoven web adapted to provide a sustained controlled release to a surface of an aqueous alcoholic composition contained within the nonwoven web. The nonwoven web has a basis weight of from about 17 to about 100 grams per square meter and includes polypropylene meltblown fibers having diameters in a range of from about 0.01 to about 50 micrometers. The aqueous alcoholic composition contained within the polypropylene nonwoven web is present in a range of from about 300 to about 600 weight percent, based on a dry weight of the nonwoven web of 34 grams per square meter. The wet wipe provides a first release of the aqueous alcoholic composition in a range of from about 40 to about 70 weight percent, a second release in a range of from about 10 to about 25 weight percent, and a third release in a range of from about 5 to about 18 weight percent, of the composition originally present in the nonwoven web. The total amount of the aqueous alcoholic composition remaining in the nonwoven web after three releases is no more than about 25 weight percent, based on the amount of the composition originally present. Also provided is a method of applying a sustained controlled release of an aqueous alcoholic composition to a surface.

The method includes the steps of (1) placing the sheet material on a pattern anvil having a pattern of raised areas wherein the height of the raised areas is greater than the thickness of the sheet material; (2) conveying the sheet material, while placed on the pattern anvil, through an area where a fluid is applied to the sheet material; and (3) subjecting the sheet material to a sufficient amount of ultrasonic vibrations in the area where the fluid is applied to the sheet material to microaperture the sheet material in a pattern generally the same as the pattern of raised areas on the pattern anvil.

A programmable and automated leak detection apparatus performs automated handling and leak testing of varying sized objects. In one embodiment, the apparatus seals one portion of the object to form an inner chamber and also forms an enclosure about the entire object. Different partial vacuums are drawn on the chamber and the enclosure and a test gas injected into the enclosure. The chamber is monitored for test gas leakage from the enclosure. The apparatus includes an automated measuring subsystem for obtaining a physical parameter of the object which is then compared with data in a program controller's memory to determine a pass/fail leak rate for that particular object. The vacuum system used has separate vacuum lines to the enclosure and chamber and the test gas purging system combined with the use of separate vacuum lines results in the efficient and rapid purging of test gas prior to testing the next object.
