    摘要: A liquid crystal display device has a pair of transparent substrates facing each other with a liquid crystal layer therebetween. First and second phase difference plates and a first polarizing plate are formed sequentially on one of the transparent substrates, while a reflector, a third phase difference plate, and a second polarizing plate are formed sequentially on the other of the transparent substrates. The reflector is a metal reflection film on a base material with concave portions formed thereon. The metal reflection film includes a plurality of concave surfaces corresponding to the concave portions that face the transparent substrate. The thickness of the metal reflection film is within the range of 5 to 50 nm.

    摘要: A liquid crystal display includes a pair of substrates which oppose each other with a liquid crystal layer therebetween; a light source provided on the exterior of one of the substrates; and at least an organic film, a metallic reflection film, an overcoat film, an electrode layer, and an alignment film formed on the inner face of one of the substrates. Many concave portions are contiguously formed on a surface of the organic film, the inner surface of each concave portion constituting a part of a spherical surface. The metallic reflection film has a thickness of 80 to 500 Å. A transflector and a liquid crystal display including the transflector are also disclosed.

When an angle between a direction of a normal line with respect to a display surface of the liquid crystal display device and a main viewing direction is from about 0 degrees to about 20 degrees, a reflection ratio peak value of light incident upon the liquid crystal display device and reflected by the reflector is set so as to occur within a range of about 20 degrees from the normal line direction.

    摘要: An alignment layer for use in liquid crystals including a macromolecular material deposited on a glass substrate, the macromolecular material composed of main molecular chains which are, on the average, aligned in a first direction. A series of parallel microgrooves are formed in the macromolecular material and aligned perpendicular to the first direction, each microgroove being separated by a ridge having a triangular cross-section, and each ridge having first and second sides meeting at an apex, wherein the first side has a shorter length than the second side. As a result, disclination does not occur and sufficient reliability against external forces and heat may be obtained. In addition, numerous methods are disclosed for forming the alignment layer.

    摘要: This invention relates to a source material for vapor deposition, which is useful for forming a magnesium oxide thin film by vacuum vapor deposition process, and to a method of forming a transparent barrier film by using the magnesium oxide source material. The source material is composed of a magnesium oxide having a bulk density of 2.5 g/ml or more. This magnesium oxide can be obtained by sintering or fusing magnesium oxide material. For producing a transparent barrier film having a gas barrier property, this magnesium oxide is vapor-deposited on a surface of a transparent plastic base film by means of vacuum vapor deposition. The volume shrinkage or cracking of the evaporation source material can be avoided, thereby stabilizing the evaporation and prolonging duration of the evaporation. Further, it is possible to utilize a high power of electron beam. Since the evaporation source material is substantially free from pore, the evacuation of gas from the evaporation apparatus can be finished within a short period of time, and the vacuum degree within the evaporation apparatus can be stabilized. Since there is no splash or scattering during the evaporation., a transparent barrier film which is uniform in thickness and free from pinhole can be obtained.

The liquid crystal composition has a twist angle set within a range of 180-300 degrees and a retardation set within a range of 0.45-0.7 .mu.m wherein when an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal display is in a dark state, while when the electrid field is not applied, the liquid crystal display is in a bright state. A dichromatic coloring matter is contained in the liquid crystal composition, and it has a hue complementary to that of an image color of the liquid-crystal display in the bright state.
