Abstract:
Systems and methods are provided for minimizing power consumption in a wireless mobile device. In one embodiment, a computer implemented method is provided that facilitates utilization of resources of a mobile device. This includes identifying available resources of a device and dynamically disabling or enabling subsets of the resources as a function of at least a channel estimation to improve or optimize performance of the device.
Abstract:
A system and method are provided for supplying a frequency-smoothed communications training signal. The method generates a frequency-smoothed unbiased training signal in a quadrature modulation transmitter. The frequency-smoothed unbiased training signal includes a plurality of pilot signal products, where each pilot signal product includes complex plane information represented by a reference frequency subcarrier, multiplying complex plane information represented by mirror frequency subcarrier. The sum of the plurality of pilot signal products is equal to zero. The method supplies the frequency-smoothed unbiased training signal so that it may be transmitted within a single symbol period. System and methods are also provided for using a frequency-smoothed training signal in the calculation of a receiver channel estimate.
Abstract:
Compact antennas for ultra wide band applications are disclosed. The compact antenna may be an elliptic dipole antenna with a poise and counterpoise both having an elliptical shape. A substrate may be used to support the poise and counterpoise with the substrate having a closed three-dimensional shape.
Abstract:
A device and method is provided to facilitate direct high speed data transfer between at least two wireless devices in order to support high speed local connectivity while mitigating the need for multimedia servers. A short range high speed link is established between wireless devices using an uplink band of a licensed spectrum in the case of Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) systems and the same band in the case of Time Division duplex (TDD) systems, hence enhancing the spectrum efficiency.
Abstract:
The disclosed system manages information that is received from one or more users over a communication network. A user provides information to the network using a network node, such as a data acquisition device that is a wireless, mobile communication device. The system monitors the user's location within a communication environment and sends an alarm to a user when the user is near a location that satisfies user-specified criteria. The system stores the user-provided information at a central database that is linked to the communication network. When an authorized user revises the information, any other authorized user can access the revised information by accessing the central database through a node of the communication network.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for conducting a pilot signal search in a wireless communications network. The location of a mobile is determined within the network. This location is then used in determining search window sizes and other search parameter information that is used to search all pilot signals identified in a designated pilot signal set. Search window size is also determined based upon the location of the mobile and another component related to multipath effects for a transmitted pilot signal.
Abstract:
A system and method for determining the size and center of a search for global positioning system (GPS) satellites. The system and method uses information taken from a wireless communication device for which the location is sought. The information includes determinations as to what communication base stations are local to the wireless communication device and how far away each such base station is from the wireless communication system.
Abstract:
A novel and improved method and apparatus for planning a wireless telecommunications network. An electronic representation of wireless telecommunications system can be configured within a given market area and the operation of that wireless telecommunications system simulated. The simulation is performed using a set of databases that contain terrain and population information associated with the market area over which the wireless network in configured. To perform the simulation a composite propagation loss matrix and a demand and service vector are generated using the terrain and population information, as well as the configuration of the wireless telecommunications network. Once the composite propagation loss matrix and the demand and service vector are generated an analysis of the reverse link is performed. Subsequently, an analysis of the forward link is performed. During both the reverse and forward link analysis the multiple iterations of analysis are performed until a stable result is achieved. Upon completion of the reverse and forward link analysis, the results of the simulation are displayed in a graphical manner for examination.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for efficiently transmitting location assistance information to a mobile communication device over a control channel with a minimal impact on the capacity of the control channel. A position location server provides a difference between satellite locations which have been computed using Almanac data and then Ephemeris data. Sending only the difference between the locations and clock corrections computed using the two different data types, the total amount of information to be transmitted to a mobile communication device is significantly reduced. Furthermore, by providing rate of change information, the method and apparatus allows the location assistance information to remain valid for a relatively long time after it is has been received by the mobile communication device.
Abstract:
A wireless remote telemetry system which uses low-cost remote communication devices operating on existing wireless communication systems in order to provide real-time reading and control of remote devices. In an embodiment applicable to utility service, consumption of electrical power among a population of customers is measured by a utility metering system having a wireless communication capability. The metering system comprises a remote metering unit which communicates with a central controller over existing wireless communication systems, such as cellular base stations, using existing communication standards. The remote metering unit transmits various messages over a shared random access channel to a central controller. The central controller transmits messages to the remote metering unit over a paging channel. The remote metering unit may operate in a half-duplex mode only. Furthermore, the remote metering unit may provide a gateway to advanced consumer services at the remote location.
