Systems and methods for modifying ice adhesion strength of ice adhered to an object. An electrode is electrically insulated from the object and a power source, e.g., a battery, is coupled to the object and the electrode. The source generates power to an interface between the ice and the object when the ice completes the circuit. The object is conductive or is doped as a semiconductor so that a voltage to the interface selectively modifies the ice adhesion strength. The strength can be increased or decreased relative to its static state (i.e., the state without applied voltage). Ice can, thus, be removed with less work. The system preferably includes an electrically insulating material disposed between the object and the electrode; the insulating material is substantially conformal to the object and the electrode. The invention also includes a ferroelectric material applied to power lines to melt or prevent ice formation.

This invention discloses novel catalyzed surface composition altering formulations and methods and catalyzed surface coating formulations and methods, which contain one or more catalysts, along with optional other ingredients, wherein the catalysts serve to effect in situ chemical bonding reactions in that the catalysts function to initiate, to promote, to accelerate, and/or to increase the formation and yield of persistent, solid, corrosion-resistant, impact-resistant, wear-resistant, and/or non-stick surface compositions and surface coating films, which may exhibit pigmentation and other aesthetic features, and may be designed to be environmentally benign. The disclosed formulation and methods may be used to alter the surface composition and to coat the surfaces of vehicles, such as aircraft, and to improve the anti-icing characteristics of the vehicle surfaces.

A plurality of electrodes in a solid object are located proximate to the contact interface between an ice layer and the surface of the solid object. A power source provides a potential difference across the electrodes to generate an electric field at the contact interface, thereby increasing the friction force between the solid object and the ice. Preferably, the power source is in AC power source. A capacitor in series between the power source and the electrodes creates an additional impedance for limiting the AC current to a level safe for human exposure.

Various embodiment ice mitigating surface coatings may be formed by hydrolysis of one or more substituted n-alkyldimethylalkoxysilanes terminated with functionalities having the following characteristics with respect to water: 1) non-polar interactions; 2) hydrogen bonding through donor and acceptor interactions; or 3) hydrogen bonding through acceptor interactions only. The substituted n-alkyldimethylalkoxysilanes of the various embodiments may include methyl terminated species, hydroxyl terminated species, ethylene glycol terminated species, and methoxyethylene glycol terminated species. Various embodiment ice mitigating surface coatings may be applied to metal surfaces, such as aluminum surfaces. Various embodiment substituted n-alkyldimethylalkoxysilanes may have an aliphatic chain that is saturated and liner or branched or that is partially unsaturated and liner or branched.
