Abstract:
A method of making a splice termination for a synthetic fiber rope, said synthetic fiber rope comprising a fiber core and at least a layer of synthetic fiber strands twisted around said fiber core, said method comprising steps: (a) Providing a synthetic fiber rope having a laid construction and an unrestrainedend, (b) Measuring tails having a length of L1 from the end of the rope, applying cloth or tape on the synthetic fiber rope for a length L2 from the end of tails to form a taped section, (c) Bending the synthetic fiber rope at the point having a length of about L1+L2/2 from the end of the rope to form an eye, (d) Untwisting the core and the strands of the tails, dividing and bundling up the yarns equally amongst the number strands of the outer layer of the synthetic fiber rope so that forming a plurality of bundled tails, (e) Tucking and pulling the plurality of bundled tail(s) respectively through between respective strand(s) of the outer layer of the synthetic fiber rope next to the taped section to form a tucked section, (f) Repeating step of tucking and pulling the plurality of bundled tail(s) respectively through between respective strand(s) of the outer layer of the synthetic fiber rope next to the previously tucked section to form a spliced termination.
Abstract:
A composite wire has a thermoplastic core component and a sheath. The sheath includes at least two groups of reinforcement threads wrapped around the core component. The at least two groups of reinforcement threads form angles with the core component, with the overall sum of all angles which are essentially zero.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a cable using cold-drawn shape memory alloy wires, which facilitates concrete prestressing or other operations, and has excellent adhesion to concrete and manufacturability. The cable using cold-drawn shape memory alloy wires includes: a core wire configured by a cold-drawn shape memory alloy deformed by cold drawing to have an increased length; and a plurality of peripheral wires configured by cold-drawn shape memory alloy wires which are deformed by cold drawing to have an increased length and are couple to the core wire while being wound in a same direction along the circumference of the core wire.
Abstract:
A braided structure that includes a core and a sheath is provided. The core includes a yarn formed at least in part from an aromatic polymer (e.g., an aromatic polyester/liquid crystalline polymer or an aramid polymer), and the sheath, which includes a plurality of ultra high molecular weight polyolefin yarns, is braided around the core. The sheath has an overall diameter ranging from about 60 micrometers to about 650 micrometers. Despite its small diameter, the braided structure can be creep resistant and abrasion resistant while at the same time exhibiting low elongation, a high load at break, and high stiffness. The braided structure can be used in medical applications such as sutures, load bearing orthopedic applications, artificial tendons/ligaments, fixation devices, actuation cables, components for tissue repair, etc.
Abstract:
A belt for use as for example an elevator belt, flat belt, synchronous belt or toothed belt comprises steel strands held in parallel by a polymer jacket. The steel strands have a diameter ‘D’ and are separated by a pitch ‘p’. The ratio of diameter ‘D’ over pitch ‘p’ is larger than 0.55. Such belt arrangement prevents the cutting of the polymer jacket between strand and pulley and abates the noise generation during use. The belts are best built with a type of parallel lay strands particularly designed for use in a belt. These strands do not show core migration during use of the belt.
Abstract:
A plurality of wire elements for use in an energy recovery device comprising Shape Memory Alloy or other Negative Thermal Expansion (NTE) material, wherein at least one wire element is fixed at one end and free to move at a second end, such that the wire elements are arranged adjacently and are in friction or interference contact with each other and are secured at the outer perimeter of wires utilising a securing means. In such arrangement, during the operation of the bundle arrangement in a heat engine system, the plate elements act to transmit the aggregated force generation of the wire grouping and thus usefully recover and transmit power.
Abstract:
A hanger wire for contact wires of railway electrical lines may include: first wires including copper or a first alloy of copper; and second wires including a steel core coupled with a layer of copper or a second alloy of copper. An overhead contact line suitable to transmit electric power to a locomotive may include: at least one conductor element connected to a high voltage electric energy distribution network; at least one suspension wire fastened to a series of supporting poles arranged along the overhead contact line; and a plurality of hanger wires connecting the at least one conductor element to the at least one suspension wire. The hanger wires may include: first wires including copper or a first alloy of copper; and second wires including a steel core coupled with a layer of copper or a second alloy of copper.
Abstract:
A bead wire has a composition of Mn: 5-35 at % and Al: 5-20 at % and the remainder being Fe and inevitable impurities, in which a steel structure is an austenite single-phase structure, and achieves weight reduction and high ductility without reducing strength.
Abstract:
A system and method for actively damping tension members modulates the natural frequency of shape memory alloys incorporated into tension members, such as suspension ropes or cables. The frequency of the tension member can be modulated by heating the shape memory alloy, such modulation preventing potentially destructive resonance with natural exciting forces.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an abrasion resistant fabric containing ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) filaments and thermotropic liquid crystal polymers (LCP), the use thereof as protective means and to a protective cover containing said fabric. In particular, the invention relates to a rope and to a roundsling containing the protective cover.
