    摘要: An optical circuit includes 1-in/4-out optical branching elements (3-1˜3-4), optical gate elements (4-1˜4-4) and 2-in/1-out optical selection elements (5-1˜5-4, 6-1˜6-4 and 7-1˜7-4). The optical branching elements (3-1˜3-4), the optical gate elements (4-1˜4-4) and the optical selection elements (5-1˜5-4, 6-1˜6-4 and 7-1˜7-4) are formed on the same substrate using optical waveguides. The optical selection elements (5-1˜5-4, 6-1˜6-4 and 7-1˜7-4) are arranged so that optical signals pass through a maximum of n levels (2n≧M) of the optical selection elements. The optical waveguides (8, 9) are arranged so that the number of times that one optical waveguide connected to input ports of an optical selection element intersects with the other optical waveguides is (N−1) times or less per level of the optical selection element.

    摘要: An optical path switching method includes converging and irradiating, on a light absorption layer film provided in a thermal lens forming element including at least the film, each of a control light having a wavelength selected from a wavelength band which is absorbed by the film and a signal light having a wavelength selected from a wavelength band which is not absorbed by the film. A thermal lens is reversibly formed according to a distribution of refraction index created by a temperature increase generated in and around an area of the film in which the control light is absorbed according to whether or not the control light is irradiated. The converged signal light is output either in its converged form or after its spread angle is changed.     摘要: An electrooptical deflector is presented. The electrooptical deflector includes a material that has a different refractive index for different polarization states and changes its refractive index in response to voltage (e.g., lithium niobate or lithium tantalite). Inside the material is a poled region that includes triangularly-shaped prisms, each of which affects the direction in which an incident light beam propagates. When a light beam of a known polarization state propagates through the material, its direction of propagation (i.e., the amount of deflection) is controlled by a voltage applied to the poled region and the size and number of the prisms in the material.

    摘要: A plurality of optic modulators implemented using segmented electrodes and nonparallel waveguide structures are cascaded using optical couplers to provide a linearization of the overall electro-optic transfer function. Each of the optical modulators which are coupled in cascade have an electrode structure which is divided into a plurality of relatively small segments. The segments are connected via bond wires and transmission lines on an adjoining microwave circuit board. Each of the optical modulators includes a pair of waveguides which are sloped so as to result in a nonparallel waveguide structure which reduces acoustic effects, e.g., ripple. By using a plurality of small segments to implement the electrode structure a high degree of sensitivity is achieved as compared to when a single lengthy electrode structure is used. The combination of the non-parallel waveguides and a segmented electrode provides for a relatively large flat frequency response, e.g., in excess of 1 GHz. The electrode structure is also designed to minimize the effective capacitance of the electrode structure to thereby broaden the bandwidth of the optic modulator of the present invention as compared to devices using solid center electrodes.
