A first electro-optic crystal substrate and a second electro-optic crystal substrate are provided as an electro-optic crystal substrate. The first electro-optic crystal substrate comprises a first periodic polarization reversal structure in which first polarization pairs, in each of which the directions of polarization in response to electric fields are opposite to each other, are arranged in a first period along a first arrangement direction which is orthogonal or inclined with respect to the direction of propagation, and light passes through the first periodic polarization reversal structure. The second electro-optic crystal substrate comprises a second periodic polarization reversal structure in which second polarization pairs, in each of which the directions of polarization in response to electric fields are opposite to each other, are arranged in a second period along a second arrangement direction which is orthogonal or inclined with respect to the direction of propagation, and light outstanding from the first electro-optic crystal substrate passes through the second periodic polarization reversal structure. At least one of a first condition and a second condition is satisfied. The first condition is that the first and the second periods are different from each other and a second condition is that the first arrangement direction and the second arrangement direction are different from each other.

A system for chromatic dispersion compensation is presented. The system includes an optical splitting element, a plurality of optical elements, and a plurality of waveguides. The optical splitting element is configured to generate at least a first beam of radiation and a second beam of radiation. The plurality of optical elements is configured to identify one or more optical paths amongst a plurality of optical paths for the first beam of radiation to travel. One of the plurality of waveguides disposed in one of the plurality of optical paths has group delay and dispersion coefficient properties per unit length that are different from group delay and dispersion coefficient properties per unit length of another one of the plurality of waveguides disposed in another one of the plurality of optical paths. The group delay and dispersion coefficient properties per unit length compensate for a chromatic dispersion associated with the second beam of radiation.

A photonic crystal apparatus and method are provided. The photonic crystal apparatus includes an electromagnetic signal source configured to provide electromagnetic signals. The photonic crystal apparatus also includes a photonic crystal configured to receive the electromagnetic signals from the electromagnetic signal source and to direct the electromagnetic signals along a predefined path through the photonic crystal when the photonic crystal is undistorted. The photonic crystal apparatus may also include a driver configured to selectively cause a portion of the photonic crystal to alternate between a distorted state and an undistorted state. In instances in which the photonic crystal is in the distorted state, the photonic crystal is configured to redirect the electromagnetic signals in a different direction than the predefined path.

An optical switching apparatus includes at least one optical waveguide to deliver at least one input optical beam. A dispersion device spatially separates the at least one input optical beam into individual wavelength channels. An optical power device aligns the individual wavelength channels. An optical switch has at least one transflective polarizing element, at least one birefringent wedge and at least two polarization switches. The individual wavelength channels are directed to independently addressable regions of the polarization switches for wavelength selective switching. A second optical power device aligns the individual wavelength channels from the optical switch. A second dispersion device spatially combines individual wavelength channels from the second optical power device. At least one output optical waveguide receives at least one of the individual wavelength channels from the second dispersion device.

Provided are an optical rotator which is capable of switch-operating at high speed, small in size and low in price, an optical switch readily compatible with an array structure and matrix form, and a variable optical attenuator readily compatible with an array structure. In the present invention, an optical rotator 14 comprises a lamination coil 10a, . . . , 10c having a through-hole and a Faraday element 11 arranged in the through-hole or a vicinity thereof, whereby a magnetic field caused by the coil is applied to the Faraday element. The Faraday element is arranged such that light passes vertically to the main surface thereof in which direction a magnetic field can be applied. A magnetism-holding member of a high magnetic permeable material is preferably arranged at least in a part of an outer periphery of the coil. In case the Faraday element uses a magnetic garnet crystal having a residual magnetization, obtained is an optical rotator having a self-sustaining function. Such an optical rotator is utilizable for an optical switch.

An optical switch for coupling a trunk optic fiber to a selected branch optic fiber is disclosed. The switch includes one or two optically active elements which are capable of being configured to have a different diffraction angle. The elements are configured so that an optical signal emitted from the trunk fiber is directed into the selected branch fiber. The switch may also operate in reverse to couple a signal from the branch fiber into the trunk fiber.

The present invention relates to an optical filter comprising a simple structure which easily realizes slope control of loss spectrum in a signal wavelength band as a gain equalizer. The optical filter comprises a first Mach-Zehnder interferometer constituted by a first part of a main optical line, a first auxiliary optical line, and first and second optical couplers which optically couple the main optical line and first auxiliary optical line to each other. The optical filter further comprises a second Mach-Zehnder interferometer constituted by a second part of the main optical line, a second auxiliary optical line, and third and fourth optical couplers which optically couple the main optical line and second auxiliary optical line to each other. In particular, in order for the slope of loss spectrum in a signal wavelength band to be adjustable while being centered about the amount of loss of light at a reference wavelength propagating through the main optical line from its entrance end to exit end, at least one of the first part of main optical line and the first auxiliary optical line is provided with a first temperature regulating device, at least one of the second part of main optical line and the second auxiliary optical line is provided with a second temperature regulating device, and the first and second temperature regulating devices are controlled by a control system.
