Abstract: Disclosed are devices and methods related to flat gas discharge tubes (GDTs). In some embodiments, a plurality of GDTs can be fabricated from an insulator plate having a first side and a second side, with the insulator plate defining a plurality of openings. Each opening can be covered by first and second electrodes on the first and second sides of the insulator plate to thereby define an enclosed gas volume configured for GDT operation. Various examples related to such GDTs, including electrode configurations, opening configurations, pre-ionization features, grouping of a GDT with another GDT or device, and packaging configurations, are disclosed.

Abstract: A first excimer lamp includes: a quartz glass-made light-emitting tube containing an excimer emission gas sealed therein; and a pair of electrodes for generating dielectric barrier discharge. One of the pair of electrodes is disposed in the inner space of the light-emitting tube so as to extend in the direction of a tube axis of the light-emitting tube, and the other one of the pair of electrodes is embedded in the tube wall of the light-emitting tube so as to extend in the direction of the tube axis of the light-emitting tube. Abstract: A long life high pressure arc discharge lamp configuration is disclosed. In some embodiments, the lamp includes a first non-cycling high pressure arc tube having a first ignition aid and a second arc tube electrically connected in parallel to the first arc tube. A lamp envelope is provided about the first and second arc tubes. In some cases, each of the first and second arc tubes is a non-cycling high pressure sodium arc tube, and each is configured with an ignition aid strip running lengthwise down the corresponding arc tube. In some cases, the first and second arc tubes are oriented such that their respective ignition aid strips are effectively 180 degrees+/−90 degrees away from each other, or so that their respective ignition aid strips are effectively 180 degrees+/−5 degrees away from each other. Abstract: The liquid crystal display device (1) of the present invention includes a liquid crystal display panel (3) and a backlight (2). In the backlight (2), a plurality of plasma tubes (22) are employed as light sources. The backlight (2) includes: a substrate (21) and; an array structure (23) in which the plurality of plasma tubes (22) are provided, in an array, on the substrate (21). A surface of the array structure (23) opposite to a surface facing the substrate (21) serves as a light emitting section (29) that irradiates the liquid crystal display panel (3). Since the backlight includes plasma tubes serving as the light sources, it is possible to achieve a thinner liquid crystal display device that carries out a high-definition image display in spite of its thin thickness.
