A power transmission unit comprises a trans-axle casing provided therein with an upright partition wall for subdividing the interior of the casing into front and rear chambers and having a cover plate for closing in a fluid tight manner the forward open end of the front chamber, a differential gear unit arranged within the front chamber and having a pair of side-journals rotatably supported by a pair of spaced bearings carried on a pair of carrier portions of the casing, and a crown wheel integral with the differential gear unit and in mesh with a drive pinion of a final drive gearing to drive the differential gear unit. The cover plate is provided at its inner wall integral with a pair of lateral protrusions or ribs extending downwardly from an upper portion of the cover plate toward each side-journal of the differential gear unit at both sides of the crown wheel to receive lubricating oil flowing around the crown wheel and induct it to bearing portions of the side-journals.

A transfer case for four wheel drive vehicles having a housing made up of two identical, complementary castings. The castings are secured together in opposed, complementary relationship to define a compartment for the mechanism for transmitting power to the front and rear axles of the vehicle. The castings are of identical construction to provide a compact housing and reduced manufacturing costs because of the interchangeability of the two castings making up the housing. The castings are formed to support a variety of transmission mechanisms. In one such arrangement disclosed, a dual range transmission is provided including parallel chain and gear train transmissions from the power shaft to the output shafts to the front and rear axles of the vehicle. The opposed end walls of the housing defined by the two complementary castings are formed with supporting structure for the power shaft from the engine, a counter shaft for the gear train transmission, and the output shafts for driving the front and rear axles.

A vehicle differential unit in which an input or drive pinion is mounted on a shaft which is supported on two axially spaced bearing assemblies carried by a housing which encloses the unit. The housing is provided with first and second apertures, the second aperture, which is provided with a detachable cover, being of sufficient size to pass the drive pinion and the first aperture not allowing the passage therethrough of the drive pinion. A first bearing assembly, which is supported in the first aperture, supports a first end portion of the shaft with which a vehicle drive shaft is normally associated and a second bearing assembly, located on the other side of the drive pinion from the first bearing assembly, supports a second end portion of the shaft which is located within the housing adjacent a crown wheel of the differential unit. The second bearing assembly is mounted on a bearing support which is separate from the housing and is secured to an abutment surface on the housing by releasable means so that the bearing support can be inserted into the housing through the second aperture and, after the first end portion of the pinion shaft has been received in the first bearing assembly, the second bearing assembly can be located on the second end portion of the shaft and the releasable means then engaged to secure the bearing support to the housing.

This ring member is movable in a plane normal to the rotational axes of the differential casing and is prevented from shifting relative to the differential casing along the rotational axes thereof. The ring member so positioned ensures counter-balancing of the thrust acting upon the satellites and of specific pressures developed in the zone of the engagement between the bevel pinions and satellites.

In a differential g ar assembly in which a pair of pinions 11, 12, Fig. 1, each engage both of a pair of gear-wheels 1, 2 spaced apart on a common axis, each pinion is rotatably mounted on an individual one of two members 23, 24 which rotate together about the common axis with the rotational axes of the pinions extending radially, the members being angularly displaceable relative to one another about the common axis to urge the pinion teeth against the gear-wheel teeth. A screw 32 in member 24 is rotated into engagement with a tongue (27), Fig. 2 (not shown), integral with the other member 23 to effect the angular displacement. The displacement effectively reduces the clearance between shafts 15, 16 and their bearings, the clearance between the gear and pinion teeth and the clearance between shaft 3 and its journal bearings. The differential has rotary inputs through anti-backlash gears 21, 22 and an output through an anti-backlash gear 8.
