A tool changer including male and female flanges for respectively connecting end effectors to robot arms and the like. A male flange assembly having a tapered projection is inserted into a tapered female flange member having a rod aligned along the diameter of the tapered opening. A rotatably mounted locking stud is aligned within an opening in the male tapered projection and is machined to provide a slot having locking grooves as its lower end. The stud is rotated through a 35 degree angle causing the male and female flanges to be drawn together until the cooperating tapers are seated together. A spring retains the flanges in the locked position. A cooperating pin and pin receiving socket respectively provided on the male and female flanges at locations displaced from the male and female tapers are utilized to assure the proper orientation between flanges and to prevent rotation of the flanges. Spring loaded electrical terminals provided on the male connecting flange firmly engage cooperating conductive terminals fixedly mounted upon the female flange to complete an electrical path between electrical sources and load utilization devices forming part of the end effectors. Pneumatic couplings are provided by means of tapered projections arranged on the male flange and cooperating tapered openings provided on the female flange. O-rings arranged on grooves on each of the tapered projections provide air-tight seals between the coupling.

A tool and workpiece arrangement for material-removing machining includes a primary holder and a replaceable secondary holder which is mounted on the primary holder, and which carries a tool or a workpiece. The primary holder is provided at its end face, which cooperates with the secondary holder, with portions which extend crosswise with respect to one another around an unprofiled central region at mutually displaced sides so as to be parallel at respective mutually opposite sides, and which have respective flanks. The corresponding end face of the replaceable secondary holder is contoured in a corresponding or complementary manner. Due to the cooperation of the juxtaposed flanks of the profiled portions of the primary holder with those of the secondary holder, there is attached a self-centering effect with a highly repeatable degree of accuracy, and with a positive engagement in the direction of three mutually perpendicular axes, so that axial and radial bending forces as well as torques can be transmitted without any oscillations. The primary and secondary holder are clamped to one another by either a manually operable or an automated clamping arrangement.

A tool mounting between a cutting tool, for example a drill, and a machine spindle, comprising a tool element and a tightening device. The tool element consists of a body and an expandable attachment tap. The attachment tap is formed with grooves to receive a gripping implement of a tool interchanging mechanism and with a through opening to receive an end portion of a pull rod. The tightening device comprises a pull rod movably mounted in an inner pipe and forwardly projecting resilient portions. During changing to an other tool the opening at the attachment tap (13) is moved over the end portion by means of the gripping implement while a wall of the opening of the attachment tap slip against the resilient portions until a stop pin on the tool shank engages the end surface of the end portion and the resilient portions snap into recesses in the hole wall. The gripping implement is then lifted away and the attachment tap is retained in a pre-centered position whereafter the pull rod is tightened for clamping of the tool shank in the inner pipe during two further centering procedures.

A tool holder with a coolant inducer and a quick acting locking mechanism is disclosed. The holder body is provided with a tapered bore to receive the tapered shank of a cutting tool. The tapered shank has cam surfaces for engagement with locking pins in the holder body to cam the shank into drive transmitting and fluid-tight engagement with the tapered bore. A locking mechanism locks the tapered shank in the camming relationship with the locking pins and a retaining mechanism holds the mechanism in its locked position. A coolant inducer comprises an inducer ring at the upper end of the holder body and defining a fluid-tight chamber therewith. A fluid conduit is connected through a fitting in the inducer ring to the chamber which communicates with the upper end of the tapered bore in the holder body. A passage extends from the upper end of the tapered shank of the cutting tool in communication with said bore to the lower end of the cutting tool whereby coolant is supplied from the upper end of the tapered bore to the upper end of the tapered shank and a fluid-tight seal is provided by the engagement of the tapered shank and bore.
