摘要: A method of starting operation of a fuel cell system which includes at least a fuel cell stack the method includes opening an anode inlet valve to allow fuel to enter an anode volume of the fuel cell stack; then operating an air compressor in fluid communication with a cathode air inlet of the fuel cell stack to allow air to enter a cathode volume of the fuel cell stack monitoring the temperature of the cathode inlet and/or outlet operating a water injection system to inject water into the cathode volume once the temperature of fluid passing through the cathode inlet and/or outlet exceeds a preset level, wherein a current drawn from the fuel cell stack is limited to prevent a voltage measured across one or more cells in the fuel cell stack from falling below a first voltage threshold.

摘要: Methods of manufacturing electrochemical cells having a current collector which, at least in part, underlies a catalyst layer are discussed. A method comprises patterning a current collector to have at least one electrolyte opening, disposing an electrolyte into or through the at least one opening, and disposing a catalyst, at least in part, over the disposed electrolyte. Optionally, the method comprises pattering a substrate and attaching a patterned current collector to each side thereof. Patterning of the current collector can include patterning a continuous sheet, which comprises at least a first and a second separable current collector. In one such example, a continuous carbon-fiber sheet impregnated or laminated with a non-porous material is patterned. In another such example, a continuous plastic material sheet impregnated with one or more electrical conductive particles is patterned. Among other things, the pattern of the current collector can include an extruded slot or adjacently-disposable strips.

摘要: A fuel cell stack and a compression system for providing compressive force to a fuel cell stack having first and second ends is provided. The compression system includes asymmetric leaf springs operatively connected to first and second ends of the fuel cell stack. Each leaf spring includes a slot having first and second connector positions. The compression system also includes tension members connected to the leaf springs. The tension members compress the leaf springs to provide a compressive load to the fuel cell stack.

摘要: A fuel cell stack assembly comprises a plurality of fuel cells in a stack, the stack defining two opposing parallel end faces. An end plate assembly is provided at each opposing end face of the stack. The end plate assemblies are coupled together to thereby maintain the fuel cells in the stack under compression. At least one of the end plate assemblies comprises: a master plate defining a master compression face having a first portion and a second portion; a first slave plate defining a first slave compression face; and a second slave plate defining a second slave compression face. The first slave compression face faces the first portion of the master compression face and when assembled, is in compressive relationship therewith, and the second slave compression face faces the second portion of the master compression face and when assembled, is also in compressive relationship therewith.

摘要: A fuel cell stack assembly (30) comprises a fuel cell stack (31); an air flow plenum chamber (33) disposed on a face (4) of the stack (31) for delivering air to or receiving air from flow channels in the fuel cell stack (31), at least a part of the plenum chamber wall being defined by a printed circuit board, the printed circuit board having at least one aperture (37) therein; and a fan (36) mounted to the board adjacent the aperture (37) and configured to force air through the aperture into or out of the plenum chamber. The assembly provides integration of circuit boards essential or supportive to operation of the fuel cell assembly with the air flow plenum for forced ventilation of the fuel cells in the stack.

The adaptor (1) includes electrical pins (4) configured to connect with a mains power supply socket; a power converter circuit (7) having an input coupled to the electrical pins (4) for converting mains power to a lower voltage supply (8); an electrical output (2) of the lower voltage supply (8); and a fuel cell (5) switchably coupled to said electrical output. The adaptor (1) has a fluid connection port (12) for coupling a fluid fuel outlet of a fuel cartridge (not shown) to a fuel inlet of the fuel cell (5) and the fluid connection port (12) is disposed in a face (3) of the adaptor (1) from which the electrical pins (4) extend. A valve of the fuel cartridge is operable by engagement with the electrical pins (4) of the adaptor (1).

摘要: An electrochemical fuel cell includes a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) having a cathode face and an anode face. The MEA is between a cathode fluid flow field plate and an anode fluid flow field plate. A diffusion structure is between the MEA and a corresponding fluid flow field plate, which is either the cathode fluid flow field plate or the anode fluid flow field plate. The diffusion structure has a first face in contact with, or adjacent to, the MEA and a second face in contact with, or adjacent to, the corresponding fluid flow field plate. The diffusion structure includes a first layer having a first level of hydrophobicity and a second layer that is hydrophilic. The second layer is adjacent to the corresponding fluid flow field plate, and includes a hydrophilic binder material.
