Abstract: We describe a new approach to fabricate polymeric materials with surface structures for applications as anti-reflective, anti-icing, superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic, de-wetting, and self-cleaning coatings. In some variations, a surface-textured layer comprises first microdomains and second microdomains each containing polymerized cross-linkable photomonomer, where the first microdomains have a higher average cross-link density than that of the second microdomains. The first microdomains and the second microdomains are in a peak-valley surface topology, providing surface texture with no filler particles. In some variations, a method to fabricate a surface-textured layer comprises: applying a cross-linkable photomonomer layer to a reflective substrate; exposing the photomonomer layer to a collimated light beam with no spatial variation, to initiate polymerization in first microdomains; and polymerizing other regions of the photomonomer layer to form second microdomains that are spatially separated from the first microdomains. The first microdomains have a higher average cross-link density compared to the second microdomains.

Abstract: Described is a system for predicting an occurrence of large-scale events using social media data. A collection of time series is acquired from social media data related to an event of interest. The collection of time series is partitioned into time intervals and semantic features are extracted from the time intervals as a set of semantic intervals. The semantic features are encoded into a multilayer network. Subgraphs of the multilayer network are transformed into a state transition network. A prediction of a future event of interest is generated by analyzing the encoded network using the state transition network. Using the analyzed encoded network, a device is controlled based on the prediction of the future event of interest.

Abstract: An aperture system for a bottom-up stereolithography device including a reservoir having a lower opening, an aperture including a flexible membrane positioned within the reservoir and covering the lower opening, and a boundary seal positioned around a periphery of the flexible membrane, the boundary seal including one or more boundary seal components and immobilizing the periphery of the flexible membrane against the reservoir. The flexible membrane is formed of a material having a low affinity for a liquid resin used in the stereolithography device as well as cured photopolymer resin parts produced by the device. In addition, the flexible membrane is able to deform as the cured resin part is pulled away from the aperture, thus enabling lower energy mixed mode adhesive failure to occur at the interface between the cured resin and the aperture and reducing the chance of cohesive damage to the cured photopolymer part.

Abstract: Dimensions of a disk resonator gyroscope along the radial line of a resonator can be varied to engineer radial stiffness. An apparatus may comprise: a resonator comprising a plurality of concentric circumferential segments and a plurality of slots formed between the concentric circumferential segments; and at least one support supporting the resonator, wherein a width, in a radial direction, of each of the concentric circumferential segments is varied depending on a distance from the at least one support to the each of the concentric circumferential segments. The apparatus may further comprise radial segments connecting between the concentric circumferential segments. The concentric circumferential segments may have a ring shape.

Abstract: Described is a system for learning object labels for control of an autonomous platform. Pseudo-task optimization is performed to identify an optimal pseudo-task for each source model of one or more source models. An initial target network is trained using the optimal pseudo-task. Source image components are extracted from source models, and an attribute dictionary of attributes is generated from the source image components. Using zero-shot attribution distillation, the unlabeled target data is aligned with the source models similar to the unlabeled target data. The unlabeled target data are mapped onto attributes in the attribute dictionary. A new target network is generated from the mapping, and the new target network is used to assign an object label to an object in the unlabeled target data. The autonomous platform is controlled based on the object label.

Abstract: This disclosure describes incorporation of a liquid additive within one or more phases of a multiphase polymer coating. The structure of the microphase-separated network provides reservoirs for liquid in discrete and/or continuous phases. Some variations provide an anti-fouling segmented copolymer composition comprising: (a) one or more first soft segments selected from fluoropolymers; (b) one or more second soft segments selected from polyesters or polyethers; (c) one or more isocyanate species; (d) one or more polyol or polyamine chain extenders or crosslinkers; and (e) a liquid additive disposed in the first soft segments and/or the second soft segments. The first soft segments and the second soft segments are microphase-separated on a microphase-separation length scale from 0.1 microns to 500 microns. These solid/liquid hybrid materials improve physical properties associated with the coating in applications such as anti-fouling (e.g., anti-ice or anti-bug) surfaces, ion conduction, and corrosion resistance.

Abstract: Described is a system for autonomous behavior generation. The system includes both a high-level controller and a low-level controller. The high-level controller receives observations from an environment and, using a neural net, selects a high-level behavior based on the observations from the environment. The low-level controller generates an output command for a scripted action based on the selected one high-level behavior. After generating the output command, the system can implement an action, such as causing a device to perform the scripted action.
