A modified aluminoxane is disclosed. Aluminoxane compounds are modified with glycol ethers or polyethers. The modified aluminoxanes are effective activators for single-site catalysts. Catalyst activated with the modified aluminoxane produces polyolefin with increased melt flow index, broadened molecular weight distribution, and improved thermal processability.

A three dimensional copolymer network of polyphenylene ether segments and styrenic resins such as styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers provide articles of high heat reesistance and dielectric properties suitable for use in electronic components. Methods for preparing the copolymers employ polyphenylene ether polymers with end caps having at least one pair of unsaturated aliphatic carbon atoms, i.e. carbon-carbon double bond, and polymerize styrene monomers and acrylonitrile monomers or styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers or both in the presence of these polyphenylene ether polymers.

Coating and ink compositions based on organic solvents that have negligible photochemical reactivity and methods for making them are disclosed. The organic solvents have calculated oxidation rate constants of less than about 1×1010 cm3/g·sec, and evaporation rates of not more than about 5 times that of n-butyl acetate. Coatings made by the method of the invention are used for wood, furniture, automotive, container, architectural, coil, aerosol, marine, transportation, industrial, ink, overprint varnish, and road-coating applications.

Carbamate-functional allyl monomers and methods for making them are disclosed. The monomers, which are easy to prepare, readily polymerize with common ethylenic monomers to give low-molecular-weight resins without the need for solvents or chain-transfer agents. Coatings made from the resins should have good durability, good acid etch resistance, good mar resistance, high gloss, and high DOI.

Two-component polyurethane coating formulations comprising an aqueous dispersion of a polyisocyanate and a neutralized, water-dispersible resin are disclosed. The neutralized, water-dispersible resin incorporates recurring units of an allylic alcohol or an alkoxylated allylic alcohol. These low-VOC formulations use commercial polyisocyanates and ordinary mixing techniques. The uniquely uniform distribution of hydroxyl groups in the resin contributes to an excellent overall balance of coating properties from the 2K system, including high gloss, hardness, impact resistance, flexibility, weatherability, and chemical resistance.

Water-reducible resins, neutralized resins, and derivatized resins useful for water-borne and solvent-based coatings and inks, powder coatings, and anti-corrosive coatings are disclosed. The water-reducible resins are copolymers of a vinyl aromatic monomer, a propoxylated allyl alcohol, and an acrylic acid monomer. These low-molecular-weight resins uniquely contain both hydroxyl and acid functional groups, and allow controlled curing with a variety of crosslinkers in coating systems. Coatings of the invention are useful in many applications, e.g., automotive basecoats, industrial appliance coatings, and wood finishes.

Stable emulsions based on unsaturated polyetherester resins are disclosed. The emulsions have high stability compared with conventional emulsions that are based on unsaturated polyester resins. The invention includes base-stabilized emulsions, as well as emulsions containing fillers or functional additives. The emulsions, which are storage stable for weeks or months, are useful for making water-extended polyetherester thermosets having excellent physical properties, even at high water contents.
