The present invention relates to a graft copolymer having excellent thermal stability, a method of preparing the graft copolymer, a thermoplastic resin composition including the graft copolymer, and a molded part including the thermoplastic resin composition. According to the present invention, since the thermoplastic resin composition of the present invention includes the graft copolymer having excellent thermal stability, the thermoplastic resin composition and the molded part manufactured using the thermoplastic resin composition have excellent physical properties, such as impact strength, fluidity, and transparency. Furthermore, the degree of discoloration that may occur when the resin composition or the molded part is allowed to stay in an injection molding machine or stay at a high temperature for a long period of time may be reduced.

Specifically provided is a maleimide copolymer which comprises 50 to 60 mass % of a styrene monomer unit, 30 to 50 mass % of a maleimide monomer unit, and 0 to 10 mass % of an unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride monomer unit, and which has a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 90,000 to 130,000 and a residual maleimide monomer content of 300 ppm or lower.

A method is provided for producing hyperbranched polymers comprising heating a polymerizable reaction charge comprising (a) a monomer mixture comprising 50-99.1% by weight of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer and 0.1-50% by weight of one or more multiethylenically unsaturated monomers and (b) if at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the monomer mixture is not a thermally initiating monomer, a free radical polymerization initiator, to a temperature in the range from about 250.degree. C. to about 400.degree. C. in a continuous reactor which allows mixing of the reactor contents for a residence time of from about 2 minutes to about 60 minutes, provided that if the total amount of multiethylenically unsaturated monomer is less than 3% by weight of the monomer mixture than at least one of said one or more multiethylenically unsaturated monomers must be tri- or greater ethylenically unsaturated. The hyperbranched polymers prepared by this process are also described.

The invention relates to copolymers containing on average 1.25 to 30 functional groups per molecule and a number average molecular weight of 1500 to 6000, which copolymers can be prepared by free-radical solution polymerization at 130.degree. to 200.degree. C. from 5 to 25% by weight of vinyl ester, 10 to 50% by weight of vinyl aromatic, 10 to 40% by weight of functional, monomers and, if desired further monomers, in which the vinyl ester is initially introduced and the remaining monomers are metered in for all monomers over a monomer addition period which is of the same length in the following manner: The amount of acrylate monomers added per unit of time remains constant. The amount of vinyl aromatic added over the first third of the monomer addition period is 15 to 30% by weight, the amount added over the second third is 25 to 40% by weight, and the amount added over the last third is 35 to 60% by weight, each relative to the total amount of vinyl aromatic. The copolymer obtained is, if desired, reacted with compounds containing a group which is reactive towards the functional groups of the copolymer and at least one crosslinkable group.

Copolymers comprising poly(.alpha.-olefin) having at least few p-alkylstyrene (para-alkylstyrene) groups or/and p-alkylstyrene derivatives within the structure therein, said polymer having monomer units represented by the structural formula: ##STR1## in which R, R' and R" are, independently, either hydrogen, alkyl, or primary or secondary alkyls. Preferably, R is hydrogen and C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 linear and branched alkyl, and most preferably R is hydrogen, C.sub.1 and C.sub.2. R' and R" are hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.5 alkyl, or C.sub.1 to C.sub.5 primary or secondary alkyl, and most preferably R' and R" are hydrogen. F comprises a hydrogen or a functional group, such as --COOH, --OH, --NH.sub.2, --Cl, --Br, --M, --COOM (M=metals, e.g. Li, Na, K and Ca) etc., or a mixture of functional group and hydrogen. In the copolymer composition, the .alpha.-olefin mole % (m) is between about 5 and 99.9. Preferably, m is between 85 and 99.9, and most preferably m is between 95 and 99.9. The sum of m and n (mole % of p-alkylstyrene) is 100. The copolymer having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of at least about 1,000, and preferably at least about 10,000. The copolymers also preferably have a ratio of weight average molecular weight (Mw) to number average molecular weight, or Mw/Mn of less than about 8, more preferably less than about 4, most preferably less than about 2.5.Also disclosed are polymerization process, involving transition metal catalysts (especially metallocene compounds with constrained ligand geometry) for producing .alpha.-olefin/p-alkylstyrene copolymers, and subsequently derivatization processes for producing functionalized copolymers of .alpha.-olefin and p-alkylstyrene by the functionalization of benzylic protons in p-alkylstyrene units of copolymer.
