Abstract:
A phosphor particle has thereon a moisture resistant treatment of a metallic nitride. By moisture resistant is meant a condition allowing the phosphor particle to fiction in a humid atmosphere for a significantly longer period of time than an untreated particle. The method of making such phosphors comprises the steps of introducing an inert gas into a reaction vessel; charging phosphor particles into the reaction vessel; heating the reaction vessel to a reaction temperature. introducing a first precursor compound such as triiosbutyl aluminum and a second precursor compound such as dimetylamine into a second reaction vessel to form a nitride precursor. The nitride precursor is hexakis(dimethylamido)dialuminum The nitride precursor is introduced into the first reaction vessel in a manner to avoid restrictive reactions. A a co-reactant is introduced into the reaction vessel, the inert gas flow, co-reactant flow and precursor supply are mainitained for a time sufficient to make the phosphor particles moisture resistant. The nitride treated phosphor particles produced by this method, which can include the deposition of a nitride coating on the particles, have excellent efficacy ratings and strong luminance values in lamps after 100 hours use in high humidity (i.e., >95%). By avoiding restrictive reactions and by synthesizing the nitride precursor on stream, the method and apparatus can be used to manufacture commercial quantities of coated phosphors at an economical cost.
Abstract:
A method for joining cut surfaces of different portions of a ferrite core for a fluorescent lamp includes the steps of providing a high magnetic permeability paste, applying the paste to the cut surface of at least one of the core portions, abutting the cut surfaces and squeezing out and removing excess paste. The paste is an admixture of ferromagnetic material and a suitable carrier material.
Abstract:
An overpack carton for packing a primary shipping case includes a packing strap having interconnected side panels and a latching panel, one or more cushion strips secured to the side panels, and latching elements for latching the packing strap around at least a portion of the primary shipping case. A method for packing a primary shipping case includes steps of providing a cushioned packing strap having latching elements, wrapping the packing strap around at least a portion of the primary shipping case and interengaging the latching elements.
Abstract:
A double-layer electrode coil for a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp and a method of making the electrode coil are provided. A more stable layer of coils is made by front winding, instead of back winding, the layers of wire. The second layer of wire is entirely within a helical groove on the exterior surface of the first layer of wire. This arrangement is particularly stable and permits more rapid insertion of the electrode shank after removal of the mandrel.
Abstract:
A ceramic arc tube for high intensity discharge (HID) lighting applications is provided wherein the arc tube contains a high buffer gas pressure. A method and apparatus for making the arc tube are also provided wherein RF induction heating is used to melt a frit material to form a hermetic seal.
Abstract:
A tungsten-containing fuel cell catalyst having high electrochemical activity and its method of making are described. The tungsten-containing catalyst may be formed in situ in a fuel cell after the fuel cell is assembled. The catalyst is formed by a low temperature electrochemical activation of a tungsten-containing precursor which has been deposited on a carbon support

Abstract:
A presence or an absence of an occupant is detected, and an occupancy sensor signal is generated representative of an active state in which the presence of the occupant is detected, and an inactive state in which the absence of the occupant is detected. An ambient light sensor detects the ambient light level and generates an ambient light sensor signal representative of the ambient light level. Dimmable illumination is generated at a first dimming level, based on the ambient light level, corresponding to the active state and a second dimming level corresponding to the inactive state. A transition delay time between an onset of the inactive state and a transition between the first dimming level and the second dimming level may be controlled. The first dimming level, the second dimming level, and/or the transition delay time may be variably set or controlled locally or via a remote device.
Abstract:
Techniques are disclosed for programming a luminaire with location information, referred to herein as commissioning. Location information may include relative location information (e.g., the position of the luminaire relative to a reference point) and/or absolute location information (e.g., global coordinates for the luminaire). A commissioned luminaire can be configured to emit its location information via light-based communication (LCom). In some cases, the luminaire can be commissioned manually, by hard coding the luminaire with its location either at the luminaire itself or using a device (e.g., a smartphone, tablet, or a dedicated luminaire commissioning device) to program the luminaire with location information. In some cases, the luminaire can be commissioned automatically. In some cases, the luminaire may be configured to provide visual, aural, or tactile feedback to indicate that the luminaire has not received location data or that the luminaire has been moved.

Color tunable lighting systems and methods are disclosed. The color tunable lighting systems and methods include user interfaces that allow for the control of color temperature and luminous intensity by a user. The systems and methods provide for flexibility and scalability, where a control module for controlling one or more solid state light source arrays can be programmed during installation for use with specific solid state light source arrays.
