Abstract: A film includes a polymeric material and a plurality of particles dispersed therein. The polymeric material includes a plurality of elongate polymeric elements oriented along substantially a same first direction and interconnecting the particles. A ratio of a volume of the plurality of particles to a volume of the polymeric material is at least 5. An elongate portion of at least a first elongate polymeric element in the plurality of elongate polymeric elements may conform to and be bonded to a first particle in the plurality of particles along an entire length of the elongate portion. The first elongate polymeric element may extend from the elongate portion at least to a second particle in the plurality of particles.

Abstract: An optical system includes a lens layer having a first major surface including first and second microlenses and a first light absorbing layer. The light absorbing layer defines first and second through openings with a one-to-one correspondence between the first and second microlenses and respective first and second through openings. Each pair of first microlens and first through opening centered on a first optical axis makes a first angle with a normal to the first light absorbing layer. Each pair of second microlens and second through opening centered on a second optical axis makes a second angle, different than the first angle, with the normal to the first light absorbing layer. A light source emits light incident on the first major surface side. The emitted light includes first and second light beams carrying respective first and second information and propagating substantially parallel to the first and second optical axes, respectively.

Abstract: An optical construction includes an optical film between first and second prismatic films, which each include pluralities of parallel, linear first and second prisms. Each of the first and second prisms have opposing first and second sides extending from first and second ends of a base of the prism and meeting at a peak. The first and second sides make first and second base angles with the base of the prism. The peaks of the prismatic films face away from each other and the optical film. For a collimated, normally incident light, for at least a first wavelength in a first wavelength range, and for each of first and second polarization states: the optical film has an optical transmission of less than about 1%, and the optical construction transmits at least 1% of the incident light at an oblique angle greater than 5 degrees with respect to the optical film.

Abstract: Devices are provided, including a housing defining at least one window, a broadband UVC light source, and a multilayer article positioned within the housing. The multilayer article includes an absorbent layer and an ultraviolet mirror containing at least a plurality of alternating first and second optical layers. The absorbent layer absorbs and/or scatters ultraviolet light having a wavelength between at least 230 nanometers (nm) and 400 nm. The ultraviolet mirror reflects ultraviolet light in a wavelength range from 190 nm to 240 nm. Methods of disinfecting a material are also provided, including obtaining a device and directing ultraviolet radiation through the window, and exposing the material to the ultraviolet radiation for a time sufficient to achieve a desired degree of disinfection of the material. Systems and computing devices including the device are also provided.

Abstract: A display system for imaging a user body portion includes a display panel, an optical sensor disposed on the display panel and configured to detect light reflected by the user body portion, and an optical stack disposed between the display panel and the optical sensor. The optical stack includes a first optical reflector and a light collimating film. The light collimating film includes a plurality of substantially coplanar alternating first and second regions. For an incident light, a visible wavelength range, and an infrared wavelength range, and for each of a first incident angle of less than about 5 degrees and a second incident angle of between about 40 degrees and about 70 degrees, the plurality of polymeric layers has an average optical reflectance of greater than about 70% in the visible wavelength range and an optical transmittance of greater than about 30% in the infrared wavelength range.

Abstract: Method of making a polymer matrix composite comprising a porous polymeric network structure; and a plurality of particles distributed within the polymeric network structure, the method comprising: combining a thermoplastic polymer, a solvent that the thermoplastic polymer is soluble in, and a plurality of particles to provide a slurry; forming the slurry in to an article; heating the article in an environment to retain at least 90 percent by weight of the solvent, based on the weight of the solvent in the slurry, and inducing phase separation of the thermoplastic polymer from the solvent to provide the polymer matrix composite.
