摘要: A system comprising a linerless pressure sensitive label stock and a printer for printing on linerless pressure sensitive label stock exhibit reduced tendency for exposed adhesive to stick to printer components. The linerless pressure sensitive label stock has a plurality of regions that are substantially non-tacky formed along the length of the label stock web. In one embodiment, the non-tacky regions are formed by printing an adhesive deadening agent over the pressure sensitive adhesive. In another embodiment, the adhesive is printed in a pattern having non-tacky regions. Optional perforations in the non-tacky regions aid separation of printed regions from the rest of the web. Various means of web position sensing allow the printer to track the positions of the substantially non-tacky regions. After printing, the web of linerless pressure sensitive label stock is moved to positions where it is unlikely to stick to printer components.

摘要: A MEMS scanning device includes more than one type of actuation. In one approach capacitive and magnetic drives combine to move a portion of the device along a common path. In one such structure, the capacitive drive comes from interleaved combs. In another approach, a comb drive combines with a pair of planar electrodes to produce rotation of a central body relative to a substrate. In an optical scanning application, the central body is a mirror. In a biaxial structure, a gimbal ring carries the central body. The gimbal ring may be driven by more than one type of actuation to produce motion about an axis orthogonal to that of the central body. In another aspect, a MEMS scanning device is constructed with a reduced footprint.

摘要: A radio replacement using RFID technology in an RF-enabled device is provided. The RF-enabled handheld, portable, or otherwise mobile device is equipped with an RFID tag having read and write capability. Data exchange occurs between the RFID tag and a network of RFID interrogators placed to provide adequate coverage of the area over which the device might move. As a result of replacing a full functioning transmitting/receiving radio with an RFID tag, the cost of the RF-enabled device could be significantly reduced, its battery life could be extended, and it could operate in a frequency band that does not require FCC approval. Additionally, this invention could provide tracking and access control using the RFID tag and interrogators.

摘要: A system for storing and retrieving data comprises a memory device, such as a radio frequency tag, having a memory for storing the data, a first identifier stored in the memory, and a machine-readable symbol associated with the memory device. At least a portion of the machine-readable symbol encodes a second identifier logically associable with the first identifier. The machine-readable symbol may be printed on an RF tag, or may be carried by a container that also carries an RF tag. The machine-readable symbol is composed of characters from a machine-readable symbology, and includes a flag character that indicates the existence of a memory device corresponding to the machine-readable symbol. A reader for reading the machine-readable symbol and the memory device conserves power by determining from the flag character whether a memory device is associated with the symbol, prior to operating a memory device reader section of the reader. The reader reads the machine-readable symbol to obtain a symbol identifier, and successively reads each of a number of memory devices to obtain a memory device identifier until a memory device identifier corresponding to the symbol identifier is found. Alternatively, the reader may successively read each of the number of memory devices to obtain each of the memory device identifiers, read the machine-readable symbol to obtain a symbol identifier, and match the symbol identifier to one of the memory device identifiers.

摘要: A data carrier reader is capable of executing a number of different reading methods. A method for reading single RFID tags can store read data to a buffer for eventual transmission to a host, and can suppress redundant data. Still another method associates data read from an RFID tag with a particular object or item using a data coded in a machine-readable symbol. In a further method, the machine-readable symbol is automatically read when the RFID tag is within a predetermined proximity of the reader. In each method, the data carrier reader provides the user a consistent and intuitive output to identify the successful and unsuccessful operations such as reading an RFID tag or machine-readable symbol.

摘要: A printer for printing on an outer layer of a print medium on a print medium roll. The printer includes a base and a cover, which are pivotally coupled in a "clamshell" configuration for movement between a closed position in which the printhead is located in a printing position proximate the path of the media and an open position that is spaced from the printing position. The printer may use thermal or inkjet printing. The printer is used without a mechanical paper drive mechanism. The printer monitors movement of an outer wrap of the print medium as the print medium roll rotates in response to a user pulling print medium from the print medium roll. In one embodiment, the printer detects movement of the print medium with a metering roller and an optical rotation sensor. In another embodiment, the printer monitors movement of the print medium by detecting movement of index marks on the print medium. From the monitored movement of the print medium, the printer identifies a portion of the print medium aligned to the printhead and selects image portions to print in the identified portion. The printer then activates the printhead to print the selected image portions in the corresponding identified portion. A bias spring, together with movable mounting of the printhead, allows the printhead to remain engaged with the print medium as the radius of the print medium roll decreases as the print medium is dispensed.

摘要: A handheld printer is movable across a target object to print while moving in a desired printing field. The printer has a position detector and a microprocessor controller for detecting the position of a printing member and activating the printing member at a plurality of successive printing locations. The printer may use thermal or inkjet printing and has user feedback and input. A mechanical position detector enables the printer to be used without a mechanical paper drive mechanism. The printer allows image rotation under control of a four-position switch and scaling of the image using distance and printline based scaling. The printer may be controlled by an external controller through a cable or a remote signal source. An alternative embodiment of the printer uses a vacuum-type arrangement to attract and hold the printer to the surface being printed. The printer may be line or battery-powered. The printer scales the image according to a user-selected scaling factor or in response to a measured printing field.

摘要: A printhead having multiple print lines of conventional design and a printhead control system for using the multiple print lines in a variety of operations. In one embodiment, the printhead control system prints an image by superimposing the printing from multiple print lines. In another embodiment, the image is printed by alternating the energization of one print line so that each print line is used to print only 1/3 of the image lines. As a result, the print lines are allowed a relatively long time to cool, thus allowing the printhead to be operated at a faster speed. In another embodiment, the printing elements of each print line print with a different image density, and images printed by superimposing the printing elements in the print lines with a variety of combinations depending upon the desired magnitude of the image density. In still another embodiment of the printhead control system, the resistance of each printing element is checked and, if found to be unacceptably high, corresponding printing elements of other print lines are used for printing.

摘要: A system for controlling the temperature of the printing elements of a thermal printhead. The printhead is provided with a plurality of spaced apart temperature sensor that measure the temperature at various locations on the printhead. A processor receiving outputs from the sensors determines the approximate temperature of each printing element based upon its proximity to at least one temperature sensor and the temperature sensor outputs. The processor then uses the approximate temperature of the printing elements to formulate either a strobe signal or a serial data stream that is applied to the respective printing element. Each printing element thus receives a quantity of energy that is a function of whether the printing element will contribute to the printing of an image during a scan line as well as the approximate temperature of the printing element.
