The invention provides a golf feedback system. A mat is used to determine player foot position, and a 3D golf tracking system tracks golf balls hit from the mat to determine (a) a ground ball track and (b) a player orientation axis, based on the foot position and relative to the mat. The system further determines information indicative of how well the ground ball track correlated to the orientation axis. Preferably, a golfer using the system is led through a plurality of pin target locations in a simulated golf game. The system evaluates and stores information such as slice and hook, accuracy, player orientation axis and ball carry distance such that the player can evaluate his/her game individually or against one or more other players. The invention can include a plurality of mats, each mat located at a different tee off position at one or more driving ranges, each mat providing player foot position at that mat, a 3D golf tracking system at each of the driving ranges for tracking golf balls hit from one ore more mats at the associated driving, and a web server for storing and collating player performance information (e.g., player orientation axis, slice, hook, distance information) for all golfers. This server is thereinafter accessible by persons connected to the server on the Internet to facilitate gaming and teaching uses.

The invention detects the loft time and/or speed of a vehicle, such as a sporting vehicle, during activities of moving and jumping. A loft sensor detects when the vehicle leaves the ground and when the vehicle returns to the ground. A microprocessor subsystem converts the sensed information to determine a loft time. A display shows the recorded loft time to a user of the system. In addition, a speed sensor can detect the vehicle's speed for selective display to the user. The invention could be used in sporting activities such as snowboarding where users loft into the air on ski jumps and catch “air” time but have no quantitative measure of the actual time lapse in the air. Therefore, users in skiing can use invention to record, store, and playback selected information relating to their sporting day, including the total amount of “air” time for the day and information such as dead time, i.e., time not spent on the slopes. The invention can also measure power absorbed by a user over a predetermined time interval.

A portable distance tracking system for use by a player on a playing field wherein the playing field includes at least a first landmark and wherein the system comprises at least one mobile interface unit. The mobile interface unit includes a memory element, position interface electronics, a data processor, and a player interface. The memory element stores digitized map representations of playing fields. The position interface electronics receive position indicative signals from and external source, wherein the position indicative signals are representative of a geographical location of the mobile interface unit. The data processor couples to the memory element and to the position interface electronics and correlates the geographical location to a field location of said mobile interface unit on said playing field. The processor also determines the distance from the mobile interface unit to the first landmark. The player interface is coupled to the data process and communicates the distance between the mobile interface unit and the first landmark to the player. According to a preferred embodiment, the playing field is a golf course and the first landmark is a flag location at a select hole on the golf course.
