摘要: A Mach-Zehnder wavelength selective device is made using one or more composite optical fibers each incorporating a phase shift region having one effective refractive index spliced between coupling regions having a different effective refractive index. The optical path length difference or phase delay induced by each such composite fiber is a linear function of the length of the phase shift region.

摘要: The invention described a method of oxygen delignification of medium consistency pulp slurry, which includes the steps of providing a pulp slurry of from approximately ten percent to sixteen percent consistency, at a temperature of from approximately 170-240.degree. F., preferably from 190 to 220.degree. F., thoroughly impregnating the slurry with oxygen gas, and with alkali to bring the slurry to a pH of at least 11, more preferably 12, introducing the slurry to oxygen gas in a high shear mixer, for agitating mixing therein, reacting the slurry in a first pressurized reactor for between 5 to 10 minutes, returning the pH of the slurry to at least 11, more preferably 12, with a residual alkali concentration of at least 1.25 gpl, thoroughly impregnating the slurry with H.sub.2 O.sub.2 and oxygen gas, and reacting the slurry in a second reactor for between 30 to 180 minutes. By only employing the hydrogen peroxide during the slower bleaching reaction, a lower Kappa number with higher %ISO is obtained in the product, these beneficial characteristics being retained in subsequent processing steps.

摘要: A portable automotive diagnostic tool (30) for receiving information from an automotive computer of a vehicle. The portable automotive diagnostic tool (30) is battery powered. The portable automotive diagnostic tool (30) comprises a microcontroller (31), a display (32), a keypad (33), a flash memory (34), a SRAM (35), a battery backup circuit (36), a ROM (37), a UART (38), and a port (39). Automotive codes for configuring the portable automotive diagnostic tool (30) are stored in flash memory (34). The automotive codes are compressed to increase storage to the flash memory (34). The flash memory (34) is non-volatile and retains the automotive codes when power is removed. The automotive codes are updated by writing new automotive codes to the flash memory (34). Information or data received from an automotive computer is stored in SRAM (35). The battery backup circuit (36) powers the SRAM (35) to maintain the information to be taken to a different location when the power is turned off.

摘要: Type-specific capsular polysaccharide preparations from Streptococcus pneumoniae, having on average less than about 1000 oligosaccharide repeat units per molecule, polydispersities between 1.0 and 1.4, intrinsic viscosities between 0.6 and 3.0 dL/g, and less than 3% contamination of type-specific polysaccharide by group-specific C-polysaccharide, are produced by a novel process. The novel type specific polysaccharide products are useful in the preparation of vaccines, especially covalent conjugates comprising the novel polysaccharide linked to a T-cell stimulatory carrier protein. Vaccines comprising the novel polysaccharides are useful in the prevention of infection and of diseases associated with infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae.

摘要: A novel conjugate vaccine comprising partially hydrolyzed, highly purified, capsular polysaccharide (Ps) from Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria (pneumococci, Pn) linked to an immunogenic carrier protein, is produced by a new process. The conjugate is useful in the prevention of pneumococcal infections. Vaccines comprising a mixture of from one to ten different pneumococcal polysaccharide-immunogenic protein (Pn-Ps-PRO) conjugates induce broadly protective recipient immune responses against the cognate pathogens from which the polysaccharide components are derived. Young children and infants younger than 2 years old, normally unable to mount a protective immune response to the Pn-Ps alone, exhibit protective immune responses upon vaccination with these Pn-Ps-PRO conjugates.

摘要: A 1.times.N fiber optic coupler is formed by assembling a coupler preform including spacer tube means surrounded by an outer glass tube that is concentric with the spacer tube means. A first optical fiber is disposed in an axial bore in the spacer tube means, and N optical fibers are disposed within a gap between the spacer tube means and the outer tube, the first fiber and the N fibers extending through the midregion of the coupler preform. The midregion of the outer tube is heated to collapse it about the fibers, and the central portion of the midregion is stretched to reduce the diameter thereof over a predetermined length. In accordance with the invention, the spacer tube means is glued to the first optical fiber and to the outer tube.

摘要: A low loss fiber optic coupler of the type wherein a plurality of single-mode optical fibers are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. Each fiber includes a core and a cladding, the lowest refractive index of the fiber claddings being n.sub.2. Each of the output fibers of the coupler further includes a surface region of refractive index n.sub.4 that inhibits the coupling of light to lossy composite modes, n.sub.4 being lower than n.sub.2.

摘要: A monolithic, environmentally stable Mach-Zehnder device is formed by threading first and second dissimilar optical fibers through the bore of a glass tube. The tube is evacuated and heated to collapse it onto the fibers. The tube is further heated and stretched at two spaced locations to form two couplers that are joined by the two optical fibers. The fibers have different propagation constants in the region between the two couplers, whereby there is a relative delay in the optical signal propagating in one of the fibers with respect to the optical signal propagating in the other fiber.

摘要: After a plurality of optical fibers are fused to make a fiber optic coupler, the ends thereof are glued to a substrate to provide the outwardly extending fibers with adequate pull strength. The glue can flow from the point of application toward the fused region where it can adversely affect the the device. To prevent the glue from flowing too far toward the fused region and yet permit sufficient flow to strengthen the fibers, a beam of UV light is directed onto the fibers at that predetermined point where glue flow should stop. When the glue is cured by the beam, it stops flowing. Thereafter, the remainder of the glue is cured.
