An inflation system for automotive airbags which comprises a pyrogenic solid grain with igniter strips provided in grooves on its external surface. Upon ignition, the solid grain burns from its external surface inwardly while allowing the generated gas to pass freely from its external surface. Preferably both the pyrogenic solid grain and the igniter strips are extrusions, providing a simplified, less expensive manufacture.

The reaction canister of an airbag module assembly is extruded to include a semicircular floor, first and second sidewalls, and first and second end plates closing the ends of the canister, with the floor extending uniformly between the sidewalls, and a bottom edge of each sidewall defining a channel along its length. A cylindrical inflator chamber is suspended beneath the floor of the canister by opposed parallel wings which are integral with the inflator chamber and are insertable into and slide in the channels to a position wherein the walls of the channel are staked to the wings. A plenum chamber is formed between the curved wall of the inflator chamber and the floor of the reaction canister. The plenum chamber separates gas exit vent holes of the inflator chamber from gas inlet passages or vent holes in the canister floor. The plenum chamber is closed by the canister end plates which seal the plenum chamber by engaging the adjacent ends of the wings of the inflator chamber and the adjacent ends of the canister floor and of the channels. The module assembly requires only eight fasteners, that is, four on each end of the canister.

It attaches to, or is integral with, the end wall of the canister and includes a cup which receives the nozzle end of the inflator. Surrounding the cup is a gas-impermeable flange. Apparatus is disclosed for generating a signal representative of a co-ordinate position of a movable indicating member, the member being constructed for interacting magnetically with sensing coils. The apparatus includes a plurality of sensing coils (2 to 11) for interacting magnetically with such a member, the coils being positioned substantially in or adjacent to a real or imaginary surface in or adjacent to which such an indicating member may be moved, the sensing coils being positioned to divide an area of interest in the surface into regions, each of the coils encircling part of the area of interest and having conductors in the area substantially along region boundaries only, each of the regions being within an arrangement of the sensing coils particular to that region. A further coil (1) is positioned substantially in or adjacent to the real or imaginary surface and surrounds the entire area of interest. There are a first one (2) and a second one (3) of the sensing coils which have conductors at substantially the same pitch but which coils are offset relative to each other. Processing means (16, D2 to D11, 17, G2 to G11 and L1 to L9) includes an exclusive-OR gate (15), an output of each of the first and second ones of the sensing coils being coupled only to a respective input of this gate. The processing means uses the output signal of the exclusive-OR gate and other signals derived from the sensing coils with reference to the signal in the further coil to produce a binary coded signal representative of a co-ordinate position of such a member.

A relief valve and related systems and methods have particular use in fluid distribution lines. The relief valve comprises a body defining a cavity and comprising at least first and second openings in fluid communication with the cavity. A connector piece is connected to the body at the first opening to connect the valve to a fluid distribution line. A rupture disc is disposed within and obstructs the first opening. When it is desired that fluid from the fluid distribution line be vented from the system, the rupture disc is punctured via activation of an active material initiator and thereby allows for fluid communication through the first opening of the valve.

Disclosed are embodiments of apparatus, methods, and systems for automatically closing a vent opening in response to inflation of an airbag cushion. In some embodiments, primary and secondary tethers are provided, both of which are coupled to an airbag cushion. The primary tether may be used to restrain the inflation size of the airbag cushion during a partial deployment. A tether cutter may also be provided to cut the primary tether upon detecting a condition that would warrant full deployment of the airbag cushion. The secondary tether may be configured to at least partially close one or more vent openings in response to the airbag cushion being inflated to a fully-inflated configuration after the primary tether has been cut.
