A coupled array of light-emitting elements is constituted so that a light-emitting element in a minimal conducting state influences the next light-emitting element so that its threshold level is changed. When each element is driven by a common clock pulse, the change in threshold level is shifted in the longitudinal direction, so that a minimal conducting state is transferred in a clock period of the clock pulse.
