A system for multiplexing either a single or multiple information channels adjacent to the video spectrum on a TV microwave or cable by frequency modulating a high frequency subcarrier at wide deviation with one or composite information signals, translating the modulated subcarrier to a frequency adjacent to and above the video spectrum, and then bridging it into the video circuit at a level 20 dB or more below the peak video signal of the video spectrum. The system recovers the transmitted subcarrier from the video spectrum, synthesizes the subcarrier frequencies exclusive of most of the video interference in a limited bandwidth, and then detects the modulation of the synthesized subcarrier frequency.

A technique for identifying a program with an identification code in which the code is modulated onto an audio frequency subcarrier and transmitted with the program. A short time period, narrow band width window is cut out of the program material to accommodate the code carrying modulated audio subcarrier. The amount by which the code modulates the subcarrier is made to track with the audio envelope of the program and thus minimizes the listener''s ability to hear the code. The receiver equipment automatically responds to the presence of the subcarrier and detects the code. Unmodulated subcarrier is transmitted immediately prior to the code modulation to assure that there is no ambiguity between the code signal and program material. Automatic frequency control responsive to the unmodulated subcarrier compensates for tape or disc recorder speed variation. The automatic frequency control is disabled during the actual code transmission to prevent a receiver response that might wipe out the code signal.

A microwave communications system propagates video information and a high grade wide band subcarrier channel notwithstanding substantial differential phase and differential gain (system nonlinearities) exhibited by the microwave transmitter. The supplementary information is quantized (if not already digital in form), and is employed to differentially modulate (in discrete increments given by multiples of pi /2) the phase of a quadraphase carrier, i.e., in a non-return to zero mode of operation. At the receiver, the modulated subcarrier spectrum is recovered by filtering, and the subcarrier information recovered by comparing the subcarrier phase difference between consecutive time slots. Since the absolute amplitude of differential phase varies slowly at the transmitter vis-a-vis the subcarrier modulation frequency (substantially 15.734 kHz versus several hundred thousand Hz, or several megacycles), error-free subcarrier demodulation may be effected even in systems exhibiting large differential phase variations.
